MISSED OR FAILED JAMB UTME? JUST GOT YOUR WAEC, NECO, OR GCE AND STILL WANT ADMISSION WITHOUT JAMB UTME?

You missed the JAMB UTME date? You couldn’t make it to your exam centre until the test was over? You didn’t meet up with the JAMB exam or its registration?

This post will be the right piece to read if you find yourself not being able to write JAMB UTME for one reason or the other. This is a great piece for those who failed JAMB and still wish to gain admission this year.

Candidates who had just got their O'level results and wished to gain admission immediately and without JAMB would find this piece resourceful as well.

Alternatives or Other Options Opened to You if You Missed or Failed JAMB

One of my readers was quick to ask if there were any alternatives for him after not being able to write his UTME. Below was the answer to his question and you may want to consider the following alternatives too if you must not spend another year at home.

1. Direct Admission to Polytechnics/Daily Part-time Programme

Several polytechnics are offering candidates admissions into their 2-year daily part-time programmes. This programme is like gaining admission through JAMB for National Diploma (ND). The only difference is you’re not going to register for or write UTME before you can be offered admission.

Check out the list of polytechnics selling direct admission forms or offering admissions without JAMB.

2. Part-Time Degree/Distance Learning programmes

If you missed JAMB or didn’t register in the first place, you can consider these 5-year degree courses at several universities in Nigeria. Some universities called this part-time degree while others refer to it as distance learning.

You won’t need JAMB to register or be offered admission into such universities and their programmes.

Check out the list of universities that will offer you admission if you ever miss JAMB or you never registered for one.

3. National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

If you’re hearing about this for the first time, NOUN is a distance learning degree awarding institution. The university gives students the flexibility of working while still studying. Unlike the conventional universities, they don’t maintain a particular campus, instead, they have study centres across the nation (all states covered).

You can earn a degree with NOUN within the same duration as those in other universities. In other words, on like other universities offering distance learning/part-time degrees for 5 years, NOUN still does that for 4 years except those courses that are 5 years by standard e.g Nursing, Law, Engineering, Agric related courses, etc.

See details of the National Open University of Nigeria admission. There, I've answered a series of questions other prospective applicants had asked.

4. School/College of Nursing and Colleges of Health and Technology

This is open to you as a science student. The art and commercial students are out of luck here. Science students with required O’level results and grades can consider Basic nursing admission if JAMB sleeps off their fingers.

Colleges of health and technologies are equally open to you if you didn’t write JAMB. Some of the courses available at the colleges are not JAMB-dependent. Except for those courses leading to the award of a National Diploma (and at a few colleges such as OAU SHIM, UI SHIMKwara College of Health, etc), you don’t generally need JAMB to be offered admission into colleges of health and technologies in Nigeria - except that runs national diploma programmes.

Consider checking the list of schools of nursing and colleges of health and technologies in Nigeria and see if their admission forms are on sale.

5. A’level Programmes - IJMB, JUPEB, NABTEB A'level, etc

It’s a pain in the ass if your friend could write JAMB and be offered admission which you missed. By next year, he will be at the 200 level.

You can also be at the 200 level by next year even without writing UTME. Taking the route of Advanced programmes called A’level courses is the magic. A’levels include the IJMB, JUPEB, NABTEB, Cambridge.

Taking any of the above courses will keep you busy at a study centre or in a university for the next 12 months. You’ll have to pass the final exams and win the right point before you obtain JAMB Direct entry form (which doesn’t require writing UTME). Then, you could be offered admission to the 200 level of your university and course of choice.

Learn more about A’level programmes and see the list of institutions running the programmes.

6. Preliminary Courses – Predegree, Remedial, Pre-ND or Pre-NCE

This is the least recommended though. But half a loaf is always better than none.

A pre-degree programme is conducted and administered by a university, polytechnic or college of education your focus. It’s usually a six-month course designed to groom secondary school leavers for 100-level courses in the university.

This will be the right take for you if you miss JAMB and you don’t want to be hanging around till next year.

A few setbacks to this programme include the fact that you will still be required to write JAMB which you have to pass and meet a certain predetermined cut-off mark before being offered 100-level admission. You will need to move to the 100 level after all.

Read this to understand the pre-degree programme further and consider the institutions listed in the post.
