WAEC: Private and School Candidates Difference Explained

While it's very common among students to ask me the difference between WAEC for private students and WAEC for school students, it's not uncommon to see teachers and other education consultants (one just called asking me to explain) still confused about the difference. When trying to check your WAEC result, you'll come across this, and in a few related cases such as when registering for post-UTME or reading news, you can come across it.

So, what is the difference? Which one should be chosen for candidates who wrote the WAEC May/June and those who wrote the Jan/Feb or August/Sept WAEC GCE?

WAEC For School Candidates Is the WAEC May/June

The most common WAEC is the one you sit for when you're done in secondary school, usually at SS3. This WAEC is also called the WAEC May/June, even if you do it in March or April; it's customarily called the WAEC May/June.

This name was well known until recently when the council renamed it "WAEC for School Candidates". So, wherever you see that, it means the same as WAEC May/June.

WAEC Private Candidates Is The WAEC GCE

Where this is required, if you must check results or do anything related, the option "Private Candidates" is the same as the WAEC GCE. Until a few years ago, there was only one WAEC GCE in a year. That was then called the WAEC GCE or WAEC Nov/Dec. However, there are two WAEC GCE now - the Jan/Feb (2nd) series and the Aug/Sept (1st) series.

These exams are usually registered by individual candidates on the internet and usually through the help of cyber cafes unlike the "school candidates WAEC" which is registered through the school management.

Irrespective of the place where this is required, you choose any of the three private candidates' series. For example, let's say you want to check the old WAEC GCE written in November/December or named that, the option to choose under the "Examination" will be "Private Candidates Results". Also, if yours is the WAEC January/February or the August/September, you'll choose the same "Private Candidates Results".

These examinations are called or renamed "WAEC for Private Candidates" because the series of WAEC is meant to accommodate candidates who sit for its exams outside the school. The exams are for candidates who are in classes before SS3 (i.e., SS1 or 2) or those who have finished secondary school but failed some papers that need to be made up without going back to any school to re-enroll or candidates who are too old and don't want to go back to secondary schools before they can get their results.
