Difference Between a School of Nursing and College of Health Technology

School/college of nursing is usually operated and administered by a University teaching hospital to train and groom students for 3-year health care services. The Colleges of health technology usually train health care providers in areas including community and environmental health care, food hygiene and laboratory assistance, etc. Colleges of health are usually independent of any university teaching hospital while programmes duration varies depending on the courses.

List of Schools/Colleges of Health in Nigeria

Below are a few colleges of health and technology in Nigeria (listed to be updated from time to time).

1. Oyo State College of Health (School of Hygiene), Eleyele Ibadan

The Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology (formerly School of Hygiene) Eleyele, l is a state-owned college of health located at Sango Eleyele Road, Eleyele, Ibadan. The college was established on 1st April 1933 with the objective of training intermediate-level health manpower in Nigeria.

Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology runs several programmes including the Higher National Diploma (HND), National Diploma (ND), Diploma and certificate courses.

For this College, you can gain admission directly without JAMB UTME (if diploma and certificate courses). If National Diploma (which proceeds HND), you will need JAMB UTME.

2. POGIL College of Health Technology Oke-Eri

POGIL College of Health Technology Oke-Eri is a private-owned college of health situated at Oke-Eri Rd, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. Established in 2005, POCTECH has developed immensely into leading 21st-century health care training institutions, spreading its academic arms across six (6) different professional healthcare programs, all approved by their various regulating BOARD/COUNCIL.

Candidates can seek admissions into the college for their Higher National Diploma (HND), National Diploma (which requires JAMB UTME), and Certificate/Diploma courses (which doesn't require JAMB UTME).

3. Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa

Kwara State College of Health Technology is a state-owned college of health situated at Ojoku Road, Offa Kwara State. The college was established to train students of different cadres in the Health profession; retrain and re-orient the existing Health personnel, and carry out research in different fields of health care.

Like others, the college admits candidates for Higher National Diploma, National Diploma, Diplomas, and certificate courses.

4. Ogun State College of Health Technology, Ijebu Ode

Ogun State College of Health Technology is state-owned aimed at training students for health care in Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, Nigeria. It was the first state college established in Ogun State. The college has different schools for the following: Public Health, Environmental Health, Community Health, Pharmacy, and Med. Diagnostic Science, Health Information Management, Dental Health Sciences Part-time Studies.

Admissions are open to Higher National Diploma, National Diploma (UTME required), Diploma, and certificate courses.

5. Osun State College of Health Technology Ilesa

School of Health Technology is a state-owned college of health situated at Oshogbo - Ilesha Rd, Ilesa, Osun state.

In the meantime, the college only admits students to several diploma and certificate courses. Hence, you don't need JAMB UTME to gain admission into this college. Note that this may change in the future.

6. School of Health Information Management, OAU Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife. Osun State

School of Health Information Management, OAUTHC, the foremost Health Information Management Training School in Nigeria and Africa.

Presently, the school has gone beyond the original concept of its founders. It has not only made a phenomenal impact in the training of professional health Information Managers in Nigeria, the school programme has recently undergone tremendous restructuring and redesigning, leading to the change of nomenclature of the training programme from medical Records to Health Information Management in line with the directive of International Federation of Health Records Organization [IFHRO], a subsidiary of World Health Organization [WHO]. This is in response to changing manpower needs of the Health industry in Nigeria, as well as the need to ensure that the school training programme continually meets the objectives for which it is established.

The college is accepting candidates into various academic programmes including Higher National Diploma (HND) and National Diploma (ND which requires JAMB UTME) and similar certificate courses.

7. School of Health Information Management, Luth, Idi Araba, Lagos State

Lagos State College of Health Technology, fondly called LASCOHET, is one of the oldest colleges of health technology in Nigeria and was established in 1920. This is a state-owned college situated at Harvey Rd, Lagos.

Candidates seeking admission for several courses for Higher National Diploma, National, Certificate, and Diploma courses can obtain the college admission form.

8. College of Health Science And Technology, Ijero Ekiti

College of Health Science And Technology, Ijero is a state-owned college situated at Ijero Ekiti, Ekiti State Nigeria. The College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ijero-Ekiti is one of the greatest Colleges of Health Sciences and Technology across the globe. It is an offshoot of the olden day School of Health Technology established in 1997 which today is a Tertiary Institution reputed for studies in Health, Education, Science, and Technology.

For her Higher National Diploma, candidates must have the prerequisites which include National Diploma or recognized certificates. For the National Diploma admissions, candidates must possess SSCE and write JAMB UTME.

9. Ondo State School of Health, Akure

School Of Health Technology is a state-owned college situated at Akure-Oda Rd, Akure.

The idea to establish the School of Health Technology Akure started in 1976 following a decree establishing at least one school f health technology in each State of the Federation in keeping with the recommendation of the committee of experts for the development of the Basic Health Service Scheme (BHSS) in Nigeria.

The college admits applicants in several Diploma and certificate departments including the Health Information Management, Environmental Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Community Health, Dental Technician, Public health (HND), and Pharmacy technician (PHA).

10. University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Community Health

The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) belongs to the second generation of Teaching Hospitals that were established by law on the 2nd May 1980. It took off in July1980 and started operation using as its temporary site, the then General Hospital and Maternity Hospital Ilorin which were owned by the Kwara State Government. The permanent site of the hospital was declared opened by His Excellency, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in May 2007 while complete movement took place in April 2010.

The college runs HND, ND, and certificate courses. The National Diploma will require JAMB UTME while Higher National Diploma required ND.

11. Delta State College Of Health Technology, Ofuoma Ughelli

Delta State School Of Health Technology, Ofuoma is state-owned and situated at Ofuoma-Emeragha Rd, Ughelli Delta State.

While the Higher National Diploma (HND) admission will require ND, certificate and Diploma courses won't require JAMB UTME. However, all candidates applying for National Diploma (N.D.) Programs are required to obtain the JAMB form and sit for the JAMB examination as well.

12. Mercy College of Health Sciences & Technology Ikire-Ile Iwo Osun State

The college was established on 1st February 2021 and accredited on 30th June 2021. The College of Nursing is dedicated to providing a conducive learning environment for intending students for the Basic Nursing programme (RN) and health sciences courses.
