List of Polytechnics/Colleges Offering Nursing in Nigeria

Nursing students at a polytechnic
In my earlier post, I was blunt to tell you that polytechnics and colleges of technology are not offering Nursing. Of course, because they were not originally meant to run nursing/nursing science as a course.

While polytechnics are originally meant to groom potential engineers and in a few situations, commercial and art graduates, colleges of technologies are established to strictly train students to become community health officers and assistants.

But with the title of this post, it seems I have something different and interesting to share. I have a list of polytechnics/colleges that offer Nursing thereby awarding OND and HND in Nursing.

Background of Nursing Course at Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology

The secrete I didn't share with you, in my earlier post, was that even though very many polytechnics were not offering Nursing, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) had once proposed and implemented it that polytechnics and colleges, that have the required resources could run the Basic/General Nursing as a course and consequently award National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND).

Below is an extract of the memo that n recognized polytechnics and colleges for Nursing training and certification.

Interestingly, many schools which indicated interest have upgraded their schools to colleges. It is worthy to mention that the Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NBTE in January 2017 for the commencement of the ND/HND nursing programme and also updated the already developed ND/HND curricula in collaboration with NBTE. The new system will lead to the award of academic certificates in addition to the professional certificate as RN, RM, or RPHN.  Furthermore, the ND/HND nursing programmes were structured to accommodate the provisions of the new scheme of service for nurses and will also allow for improvement in career and academic progressions for nurses and midwives. It will also make it easier for nurses to align in the structured educational system of Nigeria.

And below was the conditions of admissions and qualifications, as required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

  1. The programme is a four-year course for the award of ND/HND Nursing.
  2. Entry requirements remain 5 O’ Level credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry at all levels of nursing and midwifery education in Nigeria.
  3. All graduates will sit for the Council’s professional examinations for the award of a registered nurse certificate and each of them shall have an option for specialization in Midwifery or Public Health Nursing.
  4. The institution under this new system must operate as Colleges of Nursing and admission shall be through JAMB. The Colleges shall also have an Enabling Law establishing it and a Governing Board.
  5. The College shall have Departments – i.e. Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, and Basic Sciences all with qualified Lectures and instructors.

However, due to the criticisms from some stakeholders and alumni (existing nurses), the responses from interested schools had been very slow and unencouraging. This has forced candidates willing to go for Nursing in polytechnics and colleges to go back to the generally-known schools and colleges of nursing while others were forced to give in to health-related courses in polytechnics and colleges of technology.

List of the Polytechnics/Colleges Offering Nursing

Northwistanding, a few polytechnics and colleges had responded positively. Below is the list of the polytechnics and colleges offering Nursing to date.

1. Nigerian Army College Of Nursing, Yaba, Lagos State

The College of Nursing is established and administered by the Nigerian Army. It's cable if running and awarding certificates in Nursing Science at both National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) level. The College is now affiliated with the University of Lagos to award BSC in Nursing

The Nigerian Army College of Nursing admission forms are not only open to the military and para-military personnel, but individual civilians are equally eligible to obtain and gain admission to the college.

2. College of Nursing  and Midwifery, Katsina, Katsina State

Also called Kasimu Kofar Bai School of Nursing Katsina, even though this college of nursing is offering general/basic Nursing just as every other school and college of Nursing you're used to, it is as well running National Diploma Nursing and Higher National Diploma Nursing like every polytechnic out there.

According to the college,

The main objective of the movement of Nursing Education into Colleges of Nursing in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) is to ensure that Nursing and Midwifery education in Nigeria, evolves in line with the National Policy on Education and the contemporary system of education in Nigeria. This is in order to give legal backing by the Federal Government to Nursing institutions for the award of ACADEMIC CERTIFICATES to Nursing graduates.

The ND/HND Nursing is a four-year UNINTERRUPTED programme i.e. 2 years for ND and 2 years for HND. Students start with the ND Nursing programme which is a non-terminal programme. The ND Nursing graduates with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 (Lower Credit) will then proceed to HND Nursing.

    2. This has really been helpful, thank you Sir. I will like to know if there are any online courses, evening or weekend classes for Nursing. I work full time and it has always been my desire to become a Nurse but I was discouraged by my Dad to go for another course. I hold a Masters degree in Nutrition and Food Science already but I will still like to enrol if there are any opportunities as mentioned above. I cant afford to do a full time course now because of the responsibilities on me. Thank you

    3. You can try UI distance learning programme or LAUTECH distance learning centre so also the OAU distance leaning or National Open University. You may be lucky if they can accept your Master. This is because, primarily, they require general nursing or basic midwifery because of their background practical knowledge. You can do Nursing at those programmes from 100 level. That's why they prefer those who already have nursing background knowledge.
