Do I Need JAMB For Schools of Nursing Admissions?

Especially if you want to consider the school of nursing instead of a university, polytechnic, or college of education, you may want to know whether you will need JAMB for schools of nursing admissions.

A few candidates who had read my post, "Schools of Nursing and Universities JAMB Cut Off Marks", may not need to ask this question because this question had been partly answered. However, nothing is wrong with dedicating this post to answer the question in detail.

Will you need JAMB for the school of Nursing admission? Are schools of Nursing asking for JAMB results before their admissions? Is there any need to write JAMB to process the school of Nursing Admission?

These are a few related questions that will be covered in this post.

You Don't Need JAMB For All Schools of Nursing Admissions Yet

Every intending applicant to the schools of Nursing in Nigeria should know that he or she won't need to obtain the JAMB form in order to process his or her admission into the colleges.

Schools of Nursing are independent of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Hence, all colleges of nursing are not included among the institutions under the ambit of the board.

Institutions under the operations of the JAMB are:

1. Universities (Federal, State, and Private) 
2. Polytechnics (Federal, State, and Private) 
3. Colleges of Education (Federal, State, and Private) 
4. Colleges of Health (Federal, State, and Private) 
5. Initiative Enterprise Institutes (Federal, State, and Private) 

However, most recently, some schools of Nursing initiating the award of ND and HND in Nursing are now requesting prospective aspirants to obtain JAMB UTME if they pursue their ND/HND nursing courses.

For example, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile-Ife, School of Nursing, Nigerian Army School of Nursing Yaba Lagos, and a few others, require their applicants to obtain UTME and consider them as choices, or otherwise in the JAMB exams.

Schools of nursing were, until recently, generally and solely under the ambit of teaching hospitals that are equally under the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. NMCN was the sole governing body that regulates all cadres of nurses and midwives in Nigeria.

However, with the introduction and continual adoption of the award of ND/HND in nursing, admissions into schools of  Nursing will be under the administration of the JAMB and NMCN.

It's important to note that, to date, very many schools of nursing are yet to be accepting JAMB as a prerequisite for their entries. Those doing that, are covered in the post linked above.

Applicants Generally Need JAMB for a University of Nursing

However, if you're seeking admission into universities offering Nursing/Nursing Science (different from the schools or colleges of Nursing), you'll need to obtain the JAMB form. 

As earlier noted, all universities (public and private) are under the supervision of admission by the board. Hence, those who are offering Nursing will require JAMB UTME/DE forms before being offered the admission.

You Generally Need O'level Results For School of Nursing Admission

Having established that you didn't need JAMB, for all schools of Nursing but for all universities offering Nursing, before you could process admissions into Nursing, you should understand that the main entry requirements for the three-year basic, general nursing, or ND/HND nursing are O'level results which include the WAEC, NECO, GCE, and NABTEB.

As such, schools of Nursing require applicants to possess at least 5 credit passes in the subjects below:

1. English Language
2. Mathematics
3. Chemistry
4. Biology and
5. Physis

However, for some polytechnics and colleges that are offering Nursing as a course, you'll need to obtain, write and pass JAMB (at least meet the required cut-off marks), before you can be admitted. Other Schools of Nursing Admission Requirements

If the SSCE requirements are met, it's important to know that there are more likely requirements by the colleges of Nursing. These requirements may vary among them.

1. Applicants must be between 16, 17, 18, and above while seeking the admissions
2. Applicants should not be pregnant before being admitted. Pregnancy may be accepted during the course but not before.
3. Applicants should be ready to obtain the admission forms, partake in the entrance exams and interviews before being offered the admissions
4. Applicants must be medically and mentally fit to be admitted 
5. Applicants shouldn't be pregnant at the time of entry

Conclusion

It's not uncommon to feel like you will need the JAMB UTME form before being admitted by the schools of Nursing. A few candidates might have even tried to gain admissions using UTME results. This is not the case for all schools of Nursing. Although some are requiring JAMB right now.
