While military universities like the Nigerian Defence Academy and the Nigerian Police Academy do not offer Medicine and Surgery, aspiring military doctors in Nigeria should pursue these courses at conventional universities that provide medical programs.
So, won't that be the best offer if you have the opportunity to enter a military university that offers Medicine and Surgery?
I mean, won't you love it if you have the two in one - a military university that runs or offers Medicine and surgery as a course?
This was my observation when a few students contacted me with related questions.
- Does NAUB Offer Medicine and Surgery?
- How can I become a military doctor in Nigeria?
If you're on this page, you want answers to this or related questions.
Let's ride.
No Military Universities Offer Medicine and Surgery
Sorry to disappoint you, but for several years Nigeria has been founding military universities such as:
- Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA)
- Nigerian Police Academy (NPA)
there have not been any offering or running Medicine and Surgery as a course.
In fact, these are the only two military-owned universities in Nigeria. Any other can be colleges of Nursing, colleges of education, maritime colleges, etc.
For your own checking, you can find the list of courses approved and run at the two universities above in the links below.
Some Universities Might Be Mistaken For Military
There are universities that have an indirect connection with the Nigerian Army or Navy. This doesn't make them military universities.
For example the Nigerian Army University, Biu, Borno State (NAUB), and the Admiralty University Of Nigeria, Ibusa, Delta State. These are recognized to be military affiliates but they're not military universities.
However, unfortunately, both universities don't offer Medicine and Surgery - at least, not to date.
Military Polytechnics and Colleges Don't Offer Medicine and Surgery
"Well, if you don't have it in their universities, what of polytechnics or colleges owned by the military?" You asked.
Sorry, just like any other polytechnics and colleges (that are not military), none is offering your beloved Medicine.
Think of:
- Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna, Kaduna State
- Nigerian Maritime University, Okekenkoko Delta State
- Nigeran Army School of Education, Ilorin Affiliated to Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijegun
- Nigerian Army School of Education, Ilorin, Kwara State
- Nigerian Navy School of Finance and Logistics College, Oweeinta, Abia State
- Nigerian Navy School of Health Science, Offa, Kwara State
- Nigeria Army Institute of Technology and Environmental Studies, Makurdi, Benue State
- Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration, Apapa, Lagos State
- Nigeria Airforce School Of Medical Science And Aviation Medicine, Kaduna
- Nigerian Army College of Nursing, Yaba Lagos State
Still, in Love With Medicine, Try Conventional Universities
You're here for military universities but sorry to disappoint you. If you don't mind (do you if you still want Medicine?), Medicine and Surgery are offered in other universities other than the military. All the universities below are offering your beloved course.
- Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State
- Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State
- Bayero University, Kano, Kano State
- Federal University, Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State
- Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State
- Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State
- Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State
- Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Adamawa State
- Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State
- Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State
- Benue State University, Makurdi, Benue State
- Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli, Anambra State
- Cross River University Of Technology, Calabar, Cross Rivers State

- And Others
Conclusion
The pursuit of Medicine and Surgery as a course in a military university in Nigeria might seem like an alluring prospect, but the reality is quite different. None of the military-owned institutions, including the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and Nigerian Police Academy (NPA), offer this course. While some universities have indirect affiliations with the military, they are not military universities and do not provide Medicine and Surgery programs.
If your passion lies in Medicine, you can explore conventional universities that offer this coveted course across Nigeria, making your dream of becoming a medical professional entirely achievable.
