Name Correction on JAMB: Why Rejection? Beware!

Most parts of this post are outdated. You should read: New Method to Change JAMB Names, DOB, LGA, etc.

I hated it when students turned to me for help after JAMB had rejected their correction of names application.

You'll perceive my anger if you read my "Solutions If JAMB Doesn't Approve Changes, Regularization, etc."

The post was not to give a straightforward solution but to, at least, let you find out the true reason JAMB rejected corrections being applied.

I wouldn't have directed you, in that post, to contact the board through its helpline or by visiting the nearest branch for an explanation had I known for sure why your application was thrown out.

But now, I get you the answer. The board has come out publicly to state reasons they would reject your correction of names.

In fact, I'd have guessed these reasons but if you knew me well, you must have known I didn't guess. I used facts and figures.

So, why would JAMB reject the correction of your new application?

The Board Will Usually Approve Name Correction With Typos

With the official confirmation on its Twitter page, the board affirmed its readiness to approve your application for correction of names if it was just a spelling mistake.

For example, If your name was wrongly mistyped or misspelled on the NIN, which led to the same error on the JAMB form, the board will gladly approve it.

In its word, while replying to one Morakinyo John, an affected candidate, the board said this.

Approval for correction of names depends on the name to be corrected, editing of names due to typographical error is possible but swapping of names is not possible; the service costs #2,500.

To illustrate this further, the board gave an example as follows.

For example, if your name is Ahmed but was spelled Ahmad, the ‘e’ can be changed to ‘a’ but Peter cannot be changed to Paul.

In a related interaction, JAMB replied as follows.

If the correction to the name in question is not more than one or two letters, you can visit any JAMB office nearby to apply for correction of name. However, if it is a total change of name, be aware that JAMB does not substitute names.

JAMB Will Likely Reject Complete Change, Partial Change, or Switch in Names

With the official illustration above, we can easily conclude that if you have reasons to:

  1. change your complete names e.g. Babatunde Adam Joy to Adelowo Yinka Amos
  2. change part of your names e.g. Babatunde Adam Joy to Babatunde Aduragbemi Joy
  3. switch your names e.g. Babatunde Adam Joy to Adam Babatunde Joy

... the board will likely reject it.

If it's not happened to you, perhaps, you're just about to apply for the correction, expect some disappointment if you fall into any of the categories above.

If it has happened to you, you must, by now, have seen where the issue emanated from.

But Why Will JAMB Staff Apply In the First Place?

If JAMB is seeing this post, I'll like to ask this question a million times.

Why are your staff still filling forms for the correction of names, on half of these innocent students, having already known that the corrections will be rejected?

I think since these staff are aware that only spelling mistakes will be accepted by the board, they shouldn't have even applied for the students in the first place.

The best solution could have been to frankly tell the candidates that the board doesn't entertain another type of name correction than spelling. Then, suggest other ways to resolve future conflicts in their admission processes.

I don't want to call this exploitation or scam. But it looks like one!

Possible Resort To the Rejected Correction of Names

Sorry that your application was rejected or that you may not even be able to apply, having known that, they'd reject it.

You still have a backup for that.

  1. First, correct your names on the national ID card (NIN)
  2. after that, get a court affidavit of errors in JAMB names

Each time, you'll need to submit your documents for admission, or during the screening, find a means to submit the two documents with your required or affected credentials.

Hopefully, this meets the understanding mind of the receiving officials.

I will be sure to update this post if there are any other officially recommended solutions or update about the JAMB correction.
