How Much is a Correction on NIN (National ID Card)?

It's not uncommon to find errors in our NINs. Some people have mistakes in the bio-data including the names, date of birth, gender, etc.

Some data may not be errors, so to speak. The concerned individuals may need to formally change their names or dates of birth for reasons best known to them.

And if you have come across the fact that you can easily change these data through the official channels you should be asking how much the correction, editing, or changing of the NIN information will cost you.

In this post, I will be sharing the official prices for the correction of each field in your NIN database and the unofficial prices you should expect.

NIN Correction of Date of Birth Price is N15000

Officially, you're required to pay fifteen thousand naira (N15,000.00) if you intend to edit or correct your date of birth (DOB).

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has made this public through the payment platform (Remita).

And of course, an individual Nigerian can pay this amount by himself (online or through a bank) before proceeding to the nearest NIMC office for the final manual filing, processing, and approval.

However, if you prefer making the payment online, expect to be charged by Remita for its service. The online Remita fee is N241.88 at the time of this writing. So, in all, you spend N15, 241.88

On the other hand, if you choose just to generate and copy the Remita Retrival Reference (RRR) and pay through a bank instead, you'll only pay the face value which is N15,000.

NIN Correction of Other Fields Than The Date of Birth Price is N500

The official price for the correction of any other datum on your NIN is N500.

While processing the payment for the corrections of the fields termed "updatable":

  1. Names
  2. Addresses
  3. Phone Number
  4. Place of Birth – State
  5. Place of Birth – LGA
  6. Place of Birth – Country (if different from Nigeria)
  7. Place of Origin – State
  8. Place of Origin – Town, Village
  9. Place of Origin – LGA
  10. Father’s NIN
  11. Father’s Town, Village of Origin
  12. Father’s State of Origin
  13. Father’s LGA of Origin
  14. Mother’s NIN
  15. Mother’s Town, Village of Origin
  16. Mother’s State of Origin
  17. Mother’s LGA of Origin

you're required to pay a sum of five hundred naira.

However, just like for the correction of date of birth, if you must process the payment online through the remita platform, the company will add N163.94, (in total, N663.94) at the time of this writing.

You can as well generate the RRR online and make the payment in the nearest commercial bank to avoid this Remita fee.

Experience With Correction of NIN Data at NMIC Offices

Having affirmed that it's required of an individual to initiate the correction by paying online or generating RRR and paying at banks, it should be made known that experience has shown that on getting to the NIMC office, you may have to spend more.

If you can't generate the RRR or pay online by yourself (though a local café can do that for you), staff within the NIMC office may do that for an additional fee.

It should be noted that such an extra charge is not official. Yet, he deserves it if you can't do things by yourself.

However, we have had cases of people visiting the offices, especially for the date of birth correction, who were charged about N30,000 for the same service that costs half.

In most cases, these extra charges, as you already know, are not official, it's to buy a way to fasten the process for you.

If you can wait a few weeks for the official channels for the correction and approval, your fee should remain the N15,000 (or sometimes, including the Remita charges). But where you want things faster, those officials may take advantage of your haste to take more from your wallet.

Conclusion

Depending on the fields, items, or data you intend to correct on your NIN, the prices vary. For date of birth specifically, you're to officially pay N15,000. For other fields, you pay N500.
