How NOUN Run Its Nursing, Public Health, Environmental Health, etc.

The National Open University of Nigeria is no longer new to very many people in Nigeria, especially the students and admission seekers.

Very recently, more and more aspirants are asking about the federal-owned distance learning university admission requirements and modalities it uses in conducting admission, lectures and more. This alarming rate of interest might be due to NOUN's graduates now being accepted into the Law Schools and the ongoing activities to ensure its graduates are allowed to serve at NYSC, a landmark which Ladoke Akintola University Open Distance Learning has already achieved.

This post will be specific about admissions into the National Open University Nursing, Public Health and Environmental Health admission. If you've decided to apply, you can follow the guide in, "NOUN Admission Forms: Price, Portal, Closing Date". If you want all the necessary background knowledge of the NOUN programme, you will love to read, NOUN Admissions: SSCE, Direct Entry, MSC, PGD etc"

These three courses are majorly sought after by many SSCE, NCE, ND, HND and BSC holders - especially science students.

Hence, they want to know among other things:

  1. the admission requirements for Nursing, Public Health and Environmental Health
  2. the levels at which the SSCE holders will start and the level at which holders of an NCE, ND, HND, BSC will start as direct entry applicants
  3. the processes of application, how to know if and when offered the admission
  4. steps that follow after the online application and admission
  5. the modality of students' participation in the study at various centres and online

The rest of this post will address all the questions above and other related concerns.

National Open University Truly Runs BSC (Degree) Programmes in Nursing, Public and Environmental Health

The university, like any other university, offers a degree in Nursing, Public and Environmental Health.

The B.NSc. Nursing Science, B.Sc. Public Health and B.Sc. Environmental Health Science are the three health/medical courses by NOUN, under the ambit of the faculty of Health Sciences. Interested and qualified applicants, therefore, will be able to process any of the three.

  1. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a four-year degree designed for RNs who want to pursue supervisory roles and qualify for higher-paying jobs.
  2. The bachelor's degree in public health (BS) (4-year course) is for students who want real-world experiences and work at the forefront of emerging health and social issues.
  3. The bachelor's degree in Environmental health sciences (4-year course) is for students who want fields that endeavour to learn about how the environment affects people with the end goal of promoting healthier lives.

Education and Certificate Requirements to Study Nursing, Public Health and Environmental Health Science at National Open University (NOUN)

Generally, as you must have noted above, the three courses, at NOUN, are run for four years. In other universities, these courses (for example Nursing at other conventional universities) are run for usually for five years. These years start from 100-level to 500 level. However, in NOUN, the programme starts from 200 level to the 500-level, making 4 years.

In other words, the NOUN programme in Nursing is not from the 100 level, but rather from the 200 level.

Contrarily, for Public Health and Environmental Health, the level of admission may be either from 200-level or 300-level. In other words, the university, at its officials' discretion, may give you admission into the 200 level or 300 level.

In an article like this, it's difficult to have enough resources to be specific on the terms that will give you the 300-level admission. However, if you could visit your proposed study centre, prior to application, you may be told what you could need or meet in order to start from the 300-level for Public Health and Environmental Health.

In short, for the three courses, the university doesn't admit ordinary SSCE (e.g. only WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or GCE) holders. The courses are open to holders of ND, NCE, RN, RM, HND, and BSC. For other courses though, they accept only SSCE result and admits to the 100 level.

RecommendedDoes NOUN Accept IJMB and JUPEB For DE Admission?

As an SSCE holder only, if you want Nursing, Public or Environmental health, you don't have such academic exposure and practical and background knowledge to be admitted to the 200 level. Hence, you're out of luck for any of these three courses at the National Open University of Nigeria.

Even other universities, offering Nursing Nursing, Pubic and Environmental Health, based on distance learning courses, follow the same suit - only 200 level with SSCE plus another advanced qualification.

By implication, these candidates had already acquired enough background and practical knowledge of these courses before they can be admitted to the 200 level. And NOUN doesn't have physical facilities for possible 100-level teachings and practical classes.

Hence, the qualified classes of aspirants should check below for the requirements for each of these courses.
