Are All Types of Calculators Allowed For JAMB UTME?

While preparing for JAMB UTME, one of the weapons to get through the hurdles of passing calculation-based subjects is the calculator.

Of course, using a calculator in UTME will ease your concerns if you're an engineering or commercial student. After all, it won't be easy to escape Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, and Physics without the use of calculating machines.

However, you must have heard that JAMB is not allowing the use of calculators during the UTME.

How true is that? Does the board provide calculators for the students? Or they won't care whether you pass or not for not allowing calculators?

In this post, I will be answering these questions and related concerns.

JAMB Doesn't Allow External Calculators

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), since the introduction of the CBT to its exams, has stopped allowing calculators from the concerned candidates. A new provision is made for this though.

Before CBT i.e when the board was using paper-and-pencil for its UTME, it allowed calculators from candidates. When the board got more sophisticated, it provided calculators for candidates for a few years before the start of CBT.

When the CBT was started, the board wouldn't henceforth allow candidates-owned or board-supplied calculators. In fact, a calculator is just one of the things disallowed in the JAMB UTME hall.

So, No Calculators for Calculations in Maths, Account, Economics, and Physics

JAMB still allows the use of calculators in its exams including the UTME. However, it's not the physical calculator you have with you when writing WAEC and NECO.

Remember, UTME, this time, is computer-based. In other words, questions are set to be answered on computers' screens.

To help candidates who will do calculations, the board has embedded, with its exam software a basic on-screen calculator such as the on shown below.

This calculator, though, usually has basic functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You will also have access to a few other advanced functions such as square root.

We can best compare the JAMB on-screen calculator with the calculator on your basic phone. Obviously, the functions will be limited compared to advanced or scientific calculators.

JAMB On-screen Calculators Will Be Available For Maths, Physics, etc

As soon as you proceed to Mathematics, Economics, Accounts, and Physics during the exam, check the conners or top of your screening for a button or icon for the calculator.

Clicking on that will launch the calculator for your use without covering your questions.

Hence, you can perform literally all basic calculations before choosing your answers.

Conclusion

Even though JAMB won't allow candidates to come in for UTME with their calculators, provisions will be made for that with on-screen calculators for candidates who may need them.
