SSCE Results: 5 Credits Needed, Combinations, Where D7, E8 or F9 Accepted

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SSCE (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB, NBAIS) RESULTS AND THEIR USES FOR ADMISSION PURPOSES

You're on the right page if you want to know the WAEC compulsory subjects, NECO compulsory subjects, NABTEB compulsory subjects - be it for science, art, or commercial students. You will learn more about using these results to gain admissions.

To gain admission to any higher institution in Nigeria, aspirants must know the 5 or more subjects to pass in their O'levels. They need to know what grades they must possess in their subjects from any of these exams if they will be considered for admission. They equally must know if their proposed courses require two sittings or just one.

  2. NECO: Answers to Your Questions on National Examination Council (NECO)
  3. WAEC: 13 Answers to Students' Questions on West African Examination Council

Knowing this will help you from the beginning in your chase for admission into a university, polytechnic, college of education, or innovation enterprise institution (IEI).

You can see how the dumbest students are gaining admission by knowing the right O'level grades to have while we have the smartest students still struggling.

This post is meant to guide you on what to know about your O’level grades before you can apply for admission to any school.

What is an SSCE or O'level Result?

First, note that SSCE and O’level results mean the same. O’level means ordinary level while SSCE means senior schools' secondary certificate examination. They’re often used interchangeably.

By SSCE result, it means the result you possess from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or NBAIS - either external (GCE) or internal (May/June or June/July).

These are results recognized for admissions into any school in Nigeria. WAEC and NECO are equally acceptable at foreign schools.

Subjects to Write for Your Proposed Course While Seeking Admission

In fact, except for the proper guidance, students face this dilemma at senior secondary schools. They don’t know what subjects to write for their proposed courses in higher institutions.

Ok. In general, students are required to prepare for 8 or 9 subjects in senior classes. They’re expected to write these subjects in their final exams.

But do you need all the 9 subjects for your proposed course? Of course, no. You don’t.

You only need 5 or 6 of those. However, you may not be allowed to write just the needed subjects. If you must write less, maybe 7 at least.

Kindly read WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB Compulsory Subjects for a guide on the 5 to 6 subjects you will need to pass well in order to study a proposed course at the university.

Below is a quick reference to the general rules and similar guides.

General Rules for SSCE Result Requirements for Admission

  1. If you propose Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Botany, Medical Laboratory Science, Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), Medical rehab, and other medical science or pure science courses, you will need at least credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (i.e. C6, C5, C4, B3, B2 or A1).
  2. If you propose Agriculture related courses you will need at least credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Biology/Agric Science, Chemistry, and Physics
  3. If you propose Engineering, Technology, and computer-related course, you will need at least credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or any other science subject.
  4. If you propose Management and social science courses like Economics, Accounting, Business Admin, Marketing, etc., you will need at least credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Economics, and two other social science subjects like Account, Commerce, Geography, etc.
  5. If you propose an Art course such as philosophy, Linguistics, English and Literature in English, Political Science, etc., you will need at least credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Literature, Government, and one other art/social science subject like Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa, Civic Education, Economics, etc.
  6. If you propose an Education course, you will need at least credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, and three other related science, art, or social science subjects.

Kindly, check the JAMB brochure to see the right SSCE subject combination for your proposed course.

Note also,

  1. Courses like Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and other medical science courses require you to produce the 5 related subjects in just one sitting. This is what most schools accept.
  2. Other courses, generally accept two sittings at maximum.

The Exception to 5 Credit Passes in One or Two Sittings

  1. Some Art courses like Law, Philosophy, etc. and Education courses may not compulsory a credit pass in Mathematics. Some schools accept at least a pass (D7 or E8) in it. You must check for such schools and courses in the JAMB brochure before making your choice in UTME.
  2. The Nigerian Police Academy usually requires at least 6 credit passes in not more than two sittings for all her courses. Though this may change at any time in the future. See the school’s admission advert for such an update.
  3. Where some schools accept two sittings, they instead demand 6 credit passes at least. The University of Ibadan is one such university. Don’t forget your best guide in this situation is the JAMB brochure.
  4. If you’re seeking admission into pre-degree, pre-ND, or pre-NCE programmes, you may be offered admission even if your O’level is not ready i.e. you can use awaiting results, or you may be given admission even with one or two deficiencies. However, you still have to produce a complete result before the end of your course.
  5. You can equally use a WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or GCE awaiting result (AR) for your UTME application if you’re certain you’ll produce the five or six related subjects before the admission exercise of your proposed school starts.
  6. If a school, by any means, gives a student admission without related grades in SSCE, such a student may not be awarded his certificate until he/she is able to provide the right result/grades.  This is one of the reasons most students already in school will still rewrite SSCE. Though this is a rare case.
  7. Some schools and certain courses require only one sitting in the SSCE. The University of Ibadan for Medicine and the likes consider one sitting. The university, for Law, requires five (5) O'level credit passes at one sitting or six (6) O'level credit passes at two (2) sittings to include English Language, Literature in English, and any other subjects from Arts, Social Sciences, or Sciences.

Schools and Courses that Accept D7, E8, or F9 for Some SSCE Subjects

As earlier mentioned, some schools/courses may accept another subject in lieu (in place) of others. Such schools, for certain courses, may accept ordinary passes (D7 or E8) in certain subjects. Some only consider you for attempting the subject even if you have an F9 in it.

The links below will take you to such schools and their conditions:

  1. Universities and Courses that Accept D7, E8, or F9 in Chemistry for Admission
  2. Universities and Courses that Accept D7, E8, or F9 in Biology for Admission
  3. Universities and Courses that Accept D7, E8, or F9 in Physics for Admission

Combination of WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB, or NBAIS for Admissions

Let's see how possible it is to combine any of the mentioned SSCE results.

Since most universities, polytechnics, and colleges accept two sittings for their courses, that means they do accept combined results. Therefore, your combination can take three forms:

  1. Combining the same type of results e.g. WAEC/NECO/NABTEB May/June of a year with WAEC/NECO/NABTEB May/June of another year. Also, WAEC/NECO/NABTEB Nov/Dec. of one year with WAEC/NECO/NABTEB Nov/Dec. of another year.
  2. Combining the same Exam bodies but not the same type e.g. WAEC May/June of any year with WAEC Nov/Dec of the same year or another year.
  3. Combining different exam bodies e.g. WAEC May/June or WAEC GCE with NECO June/July or NECO GCE.

RecommendedIs it Possible to Upgrade the Results of WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or GCE?

NOTE
  1. You can't combine results for courses like Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy IN MOST UNIVERSITIES. Some schools don't allow the combination of results for generally all their faculty of clinical and medical sciences. And where one accepts such, you stand a narrow chance with two sittings.
  2. Most schools (especially schools of Nursing) don't allow the combination of NECO/WAEC with NABTEB. i.e. you may not be able to combine NECO plus NABTEB or WAEC plus NABTEB. You must do some findings from your proposed school to know if they do or don't allow this combination before selecting them. This should be stated in their adverts.
  3. In all cases, schools allow the combination of NECO and WAEC

Conclusion

The game of seeking admission is simple but only for those who have the right information and use it well.

Now that you know subjects you need to study hard for in your O’level exams, you shouldn’t waste your time on irrelevant subjects. Concentrate on the subjects that matter most.

Where in confusion, contact your school’s counselor or JAMB brochure (that is your best bet).
