200 Level Admission Without JAMB: IJMB, JUPEB, and Cambridge!

UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE IJMB, JUPEB AND OTHER A'LEVEL PROGRAMMES TO GAIN ADMISSION INTO 200 LEVEL IN UNIVERSITIES

If you’re reading about IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge and NABTEB A’level programmes for the first time, you’re surely not a frustrated admission seeker. Every candidate who had been let down by JAMB UTME for years had got to know about these A'level courses that give you admission into universities without writing UTME.

Candidates who never attempted JAMB and never want to try can also take advantage of the advanced courses to cross the hurdle of writing or passing JAMB UTME and still gain admissions to their universities/courses of choice.

You might have been informed by a friend, an advert or a teacher that you can gain admission into a university without writing UTME and through A’level courses like IJMB, JUPEB, NABTEB Advanced or Cambridge A'level.

They’re right and you will find out how - after reading this post.

This post will guide you on what these programmes are, and why you may need them instead of following the crowd. You will see a list of centres to do them and what follows after completing your course.

Meaning of IJMB, JUPEB and Cambridge A’level

The full meaning of IJMB is Interim Joint Matriculation Board. JUPEB is Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. Cambridge A’level is an Advanced Course by Cambridge University UK.

One of the basic facts to know is that the chief coordinator for IJMB is Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) while JUPEB is coordinated by the University of Lagos. Cambridge University of England is in charge of its A’level course. Cambridge A'level is available at the University of Ibadan International School and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Generally, any of these courses give you the opportunity to be admitted into the 200-level, of any course of choice after completing the programme.

I made reference to these advanced programmes in my post, “How to Gain Admission To Universities in the Early This Year”. You can take a moment to read that.

Yes. One smartest means to gain admission is through advanced courses. It has worked for several admission seekers. It will help you if you take it too.

How IJMB, JUPEB, and Others Work!

There are schools (universities, polytechnics and colleges of education) and study centres, across Nigeria, that are participating members of IJMB, JUPEB and Cambridge A’level. These schools organize lectures for their applicants within the campus (e.g. UNILORIN) or at dedicated study centres (e.g. OAU).

When you obtain the form for any of these advanced courses, you’re to take part in a year (usually 9 months) of intensive lectures at the university or study centre, write tests along the way and write your final exams.

You’re expected to come out with certain points or grades. The required grade levels (which guarantee admission) will be communicated to you during your programme. It’s this grade that will determine your chance of gaining admission for your proposed course to the same school or any of the participating members.

With your grade, you then obtain the JAMB Direct Entry (DE) form. Note that JAMB sells two forms yearly - UTME and DE forms.

The UTME is meant for SSCE candidates who are seeking admission into a 100-level course at any university, polytechnic or college.

DE form is meant for IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge A’level, NCE, ND, HND or BSC candidates who wish to further their educations in any university. These candidates don’t write UTME – they only obtain the Direct Entry form and take part in the school-organized tests (if any) and/or admission screening exercise.

JAMB then processes your admission to your university of choice if you meet up with the grade required by that university for the proposed course.

Admission Requirements for IJMB, JUPEB and Cambridge A’level

To be admitted for any of the advanced programmes, candidates must:

  1. have at least 5 credit passes in WAEC, NECO and NABTEB. These subjects must be the right ones for the proposed course at the university. Read, "SSCE Results: How to know 5 Compulsory Subjects to Pass for Admission Purpose".
  2. be using awaiting results, provided they're certain such SSCE results will be available before or on admissions.
  3. obtain the form at any university of interest or study centres - participating in IJMB, JUPEB and Cambridge A’level.

How Certain is Admission to IJMB, JUPEB and Cambridge Course?

As a matter of fact, once your O’level result is satisfactory, you’ll be admitted for the course.

If you want to use awaiting results, what’s important is the certainty that your SSCE results will be ready by the time you obtain JAMB direct entry form to gain admission to the 200 level (as earlier explained).

Direct Entry (200 Level Admission) Requirements for IJMB, JUPEB and Cambridge A’level

After completing your A'level programme, in order to be offered admission into the 200-level, you must:

  1. have an acceptable Grade or Point in the programme (usually 9 points up to 15). The higher the point the better your chance to be admitted and offered the desired course
  2. have 5 or 6 credit passes (depending on schools or courses) in relevant SSCE subjects (to your proposed course) in not more than 2 sittings
  3. obtain and register for the JAMB Direct Entry form and
  4. take part in the post-DE test (if any e.g. UNILORIN, FUTA, FUNAAB) or admission screening exercise of the university chosen in the DE form.
  5. Request and send your advanced course transcript to the university chosen in the DE form and of which you obtain its post-DE form too.

Where Can I Register for IJMB, JUPEB or Cambridge A’level?

You can register for the programme at any of the participating schools – universities, polytechnics, colleges or accredited study centres.

The application forms for these advanced programmes are usually made available online directly through the official website of your proposed university or the study centre's website.

However, some study centres may sell their forms, in paper formats, if you visit any or they bring that to you.

IJMB, JUPEB, and Cambridge A’level Form: Price, Tuition/Fees, etc.

No specific price for all packages including the form, accommodation, study pack and tuition.

You should contact the institution or the study centre for their prices. Read: IJMB/JUPEB Vs Remedial (Predegree): Which One is Better

From experience, however, you may prepare between #300,000 to #450,000 for all.

Conclusion

Using IJMB, JUPEB and Cambridge A'level has remained the shortcut to gaining admission to any university accepting them without writing JAMB or passing it. Unfortunately, NABTEB Advanced is no longer accepted for Direct Entry as declared by JAMB

If you have what it takes to undergo run any of the courses, I recommend you obtain the IJMB, JUPEB, or Cambridge A'level form. Be sure that the university you're targeting is accepting it before obtaining it though. To avoid any mistake or regret, you should consider obtaining the form under the school instead of a study centre.

Wishing you luck!
