How to Easily Gain Admission to YABATECH This Year

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH)
has been one of the most sought-after polytechnics in Nigeria. This shouldn't be a surprise as the polytechnic resides not only in one of the most populous cities in Nigeria but also is the first polytechnic in Nigeria.

Consistently, the polytechnic has been pursued by aspiring admission seekers. In 2021/2022, for example, only 13,741 National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students were matriculated out of 20,019 candidates who applied for admission into the college’s Full and Part-Time programs. This is similar to the figure recorded in 2022/2023 when 14,278 students were offered admission out of 23,948 candidates.

So, knowing how these 68.62% and 59.59% of students in 2022 and 2023 respectively did it should be your priority. After all, those who are embarking on a journey should better ask their ways from those who have returned from the same journey.

Luckily for you, I've personally produced hundreds of students to the polytechnic, most of whom have strictly merited admission following my year tips and tweaks. In this post, I will be guiding you on the steps to take, giving independent practical tips, to easily gain admission to YABATECH and for FREE.

What you're about to read may look somewhat usual, but if you can take the reading to the last part, you'll see some bonus to what you might have known before now. Let's do it!

Steps to Follow If You Want to Easily Gain Admission to YABATECH

To gain admission into Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), you typically need to follow these steps:

1. Meet Admission Requirements

Ensure you meet the minimum admission requirements for the program you're interested in. These requirements usually include minimum O'Level (SSCE) results, UTME (JAMB) scores, and possibly other specific requirements depending on the program.

Let's take these one after the other.

Your O'level result is as important because the college won't offer you admission unless you have the 5 SSCE subjects, at least, required for your proposed course. This SSCE could be WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB, or a combination of two of them. With at least C6 in the five subjects required for your course, you're good to go. However, the higher your SSCE subjects' grades, the better your chance. Since the polytechnic will be grading SSCE results in its final departmental cut-off marks, higher-graded SSCE subjects will give you an edge over other admission seekers (more on this later).

To be sure of the polytechnic's O'level requirements, I've prepared for you the officially-listed SSCE subjects for YABTECH courses in the JAMB brochure. In addition, the college has a dedicated link to check that on its admission portal here.

Similar to the O'level results is the JAMB UTME score. If you're seeking admission into a full-time program, you'll need JAMB. Hence, you must have sat for the JAMB of that admission year, and meet the cutoff mark to be declared by the college. Speaking of the cut-off mark, YABATECH will usually declare 150 or above for national diploma programs and 160 or above for degree programs (degree in education in the college affiliated with the University of Nigeria Nsukka). Moreover, if you get a higher score than 150 or 160, as earlier stated, your chance of being admitted before other admission seekers is higher. It's the aggregate of your performance in SSCE grades, JAMB score, and post-UTME score that will determine if you'll be offered admission eventually.

Apart from the O'level and JAMB results, there are a few other things to be mindful of as they also determine if you'll be considered for admission. Among these are:

  1. You should be 16 or above at the time of the admission list.
  2. You should have uploaded your O'level results on the JAMB portal.
  3. You should have filled out the polytechnic's screening form when opened.

2. Register for and Take UTME (JAMB)

Register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Choose YABATECH as your choice institution during registration and select your desired course.

Of course, as earlier mentioned, JAMB is required for full-time programs. However, for the part-time course, you'll only need to register for what is called the JAMB part-time form at any CBT center or JAMB office. That's necessary and it won't matter if you've taken that year's JAMB, once it's the part-time program you seek, you must do that registration before (which is better) or after being offered admission.

Higher National Diploma (HND) applicants are required to have sat for JAMB in the past (i.e., when they gained their National Diploma admission) or registered for the JAMB part-time form if they'd done a part-time program at the ND level. This is because the JAMB registration number will be required during their online registration for HND at YABATECH - and it's all to prepare you for the NYSC time.

3. Purchase YABATECH Admission Form

After the UTME, you will need to purchase the YABATECH admission form when it's released. This is usually called the post-UTME screening form. The form typically contains details on the admission process, requirements, and deadlines.

It's hard to be precise about when this form will be on sale. The best way is to check their official portal for updates. You can also check my dedicated post on the YABATECH Post UTME form to know if updated. To have ideas of what to expect when the form is out, below is a caption from a recent advert.

Applications are hereby invited from interested 2023 UTME candidates who applied for admission into Yaba College of Technology for Full Time National Diploma (ND) and B.Sc (Edu.) in Technical Education programs (100/200 Level) being run in affiliation with the University of Nigeria (Nsukka). The application which is online will commence from Monday, September 4, 2023, and close on Monday, October 6, 2023.

By interpretation, the form will be for three categories of applicants:

  1. Candidates seeking National Diploma (ND) 1 admission,
  2. Candidates seeking 100-level admission (UNN education degree affiliated with YABATECH) and
  3. Candidates seeking direct entry admission i.e. 200-level (UNN education degree affiliated with YABATECH)

The admission screening is open to candidates who chose Yaba College of Technology as their 1st Choice Institution and scored 150 and above for National Diploma (ND) Full Time and 160 for B.Sc. Degree (100 Level) in affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in the  Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). All direct entry B.Sc Degree (200 level) candidates are also required to apply appropriately on the College Portal. However, all candidates who have chosen Yabatech as 2nd Choice Institution are required to change it to First Choice on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Portal to be eligible for admission. All candidates must not be less than 16 years old by October 31. All candidates who do not meet the age requirement are advised, in their own interest, not to apply.

Filling out the post-UTME screening form requires some diligence. Hence, you may have to entrust the task to a professional and trusted cafe if you're not accustomed to such procedures. You'll be required to submit all necessary documents, including your UTME result, O'Level result, passport photograph, and any other documents requested by the college.

Official warning: Inconsistencies in the name or picture on the photo card will not be accepted by the College and may lead to the disqualification of concerned candidates. Candidates’ names on their O’level Certificates, UTME results, and other registration documents must match.

4. Partake in Post-UTME Screening (Exam)

After taking the UTME and filling out the online form, YABATECH may conduct a post-UTME screening exercise. You will need to participate in this screening process, which will include a Computer-based test (exam). The details of the screening process will be communicated by the college. Hence, regular checking for updates on the admission portal is advised.

The college reserves the right to change its screening process, which may involve only using the JAMB score and SSCE grades or conducting tests, usually online. For example, below was an announcement by the college in the 2022/2023 admission year:

This is to inform the general public that Yaba College of Technology Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) online screening for the 2022/2023 academic session will commence from Wednesday, 7th December 2022, to Saturday, 10th December 2022. Candidates will not need to be physically present but will have the opportunity to write the examination online from any location without visiting the campus and are required to have a good internet connection and a laptop as part of preparations and readiness for the examination. Registered and qualified candidates scheduled for the exam will be able to check their schedule starting from Monday, December 5, 2022.

  1. Key Takeaways
  2. Three-day schedules
  3. Remote Examination
  4. Computers or laptops together with an internet connection are required
  5. Need to check the portal for updates to know their schedules. You may check through the usual official link here.

After taking the online post-UTME test, and releasing the results, the management will announce the cut-off marks for each department for the year. It's based on these grades that you'll know ahead if you have merited admission or not. For example, in the 2023/2024 admission year, below were the after-online-CBT departmental cut-off marks:

  1. ND Accountancy 66.60
  2. ND Agricultural & Bio-Environmental Engineering 50.00
  3. ND Agricultural Technology 56.20

5. Check the Merit List and Admission

After completing the screening process, YABATECH will release its merit list. If you meet the required criteria and your name is on the list, you'll be offered admission into the college.

Some important notes:

  1. If you don't make the first list (merit), more lists will be released subsequently. So, be patient before giving up.
  2. Be sure to check your JAMB CAPS to see if your O'level results are showing. If not, go and reupload them.
  3. Be sure to check the transfer approval link, especially if you seek degree admission. The college might transfer you to another course if they deem it necessary.
  4. Your name may appear on the JAMB portal before the school portal and vice versa. This is normal.
  5. The official link to check and accept your admission status on the school portal is

6. Accept YABTECH's Admission

If you're offered admission, you'll need to accept the offer within a specified period. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of the admission.

Also, you should accept the same on the school portal, after which you'll be required to pay the acceptance fee directly on the school portal.

7. Register Freshers' or Bio-Data Form

Upon acceptance, proceed with the registration process as directed by the college. This may include completing registration forms and other administrative procedures.

The fresher's registration is usually called bio-data registration by some people here. This will be done on the school portal. You'll also be required to appear at your department for physical screening with an assigned official who will check all the documents, and credentials claimed during your online registration, for confirmation of their correctness. After this, you'll be cleared to continue with classes.

Attend the orientation program organized by the college and commence your academic activities according to the academic calendar.
