How to Avoid Regularization and Do DE Registration Easily

Direct entry (DE) registration comes in when you decide to continue your studies after completing your NCE, ND, HND, BSc, RN, RM, IJMB, JUPEB, etc. In instances where a prospective DE applicant was not offered admission by JAMB in the previous entry, he or she might be compelled to undergo regularization before being eligible for Direct Entry (DE) application.

Unfortunately, more often than not, the regularization process is much more difficult. Students have reported not being approved after their application. Some didn't even know the status of their application after all the stress. For years, some were locked up in the system without knowing where the issue truly stemmed from.

Thus, they are looking for means to still be able to apply for the JAMB direct entry without necessarily doing the regularization or if it's not yet approved. Let's talk about that here!

Register for JAMB and Upgrade to DE

One smart way to entirely avoid regularization is to register for JAMB and upgrade to DE later. This method was newly introduced to achieve the same goal as regularization.

For one reason, UTME conversion to DE was introduced to prevent candidates from obtaining UTME and DE forms together in the same admission year. If you're trying to try both the UTME and DE to see what works for you, you will have to opt for the UTME to DE conversion, as applying for both at the same time is no longer allowed.

For another reason, candidates who want to avoid the tediousness of regularization can simply obtain UTME and later convert it to DE.

Why Will UTME to DE Conversion Help to Avoid Regularization?

As a matter of fact, the reason for regularization is to ensure that the prospective DE applicant has a valid JAMB registration number necessary to process the direct entry admission.

Mind you, students who need regularization are mostly those who didn't start their NCE, ND, BSc, or any other higher qualification with JAMB registration numbers, hence, the need to get a valid registration number before being able to obtain the DE forms, leading to regularization which will eventually allow JAMB to give them these numbers.

Now, if you register for JAMB first and later convert that to DE, you've achieved the same objective that regularization is meant to serve. JAMB UTME registration will give you the registration number you'll use for the DE application too.

So, Apart From JAMB Registration Number, What Else?

First of all, if you intend to convert your UTME to DE, you must also sit for the UTME and write the exam. You do not necessarily must score 300 in the exams. For the conversion, JAMB only needs evidence of your participation in the UTME.

At the same time, you still have to ensure you do well in the JAMB UTME. The board now requires DE applicants to also write the CBT, and apparently, they must pass in order to be offered admission by the prospective universities. The same way, those who take the UTME CBT but now decides to convert will need to pass their UTMEs.

During the upgrading of your UTME to DE, which will be done at JAMB offices nationwide (not at a CBT center or cyber café), you must have the UTME result printout with you. It's on this result that the official will take your JAMB registration number and your score.

Apart from that, you must go to the JAMB office for conversion along with the following:

  1. NIN
  2. SIM used to get the profile code for your JAMB UTME
  3. Your Certificate for your ND, NCE, HND, IJMB, JUPEB, RN, etc., depending on the one you're using for the DE
  4. In case the certificate is not available, a statement of result is acceptable if the qualification is not more than two years old
  5. O'level results, e.g., WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, NBAIS, or GCE

Is Conversion of UTME to DE Suited to Gain Admission?

That was the question I got recently. I understand where the fear was coming from. Won't the proposed universities discriminate between candidates who apply to it directly as a DE applicant and those who later just converted? Won't they prefer those who apply directly and drop those who convert?

Well, in all honesty, no university will deprive you of admission based on the fact that you upgraded UTME to DE and not by applying directly with a Direct Entry form. As a reminder, universities are not solely in charge of admission. Even if they want to be biased, JAMB is there to monitor their activities, decisions, and choices.

In short, if you truly merit your admission into any of your proposed universities, you're certain to be admitted without any nepotism.

Although there is a way to differentiate conversion students from those who don't. In your new DE registration number, after the conversion, you'll see three alphabets after the numbers, e.g., 202490002344UHC. Despite that, it won't have any effect on your consideration for admission as that is only for the purpose of identification and differentiation rather than for discrimination.

Conclusion

Avoiding the cumbersome process of regularization for Direct Entry (DE) application can be efficiently achieved through the strategic approach of registering for JAMB UTME and subsequently upgrading to DE. This method not only simplifies the admission process but also ensures that candidates retain a valid JAMB registration number, crucial for DE application.

Importantly, this approach, endorsed by JAMB, eliminates the fear of discrimination in university admissions, offering a fair chance to all candidates, regardless of their route to DE application. It's a practical and smart solution for prospective DE students aiming for a smoother transition in their educational journey.
