Took JAMB 2018, 2019, 2020? Which SIM to Use Again?

Did you take the JAMB in 2018 or 2019? Which phone number should you use to get your profile code for a new JAMB UTME or DE registration?

We all know that to start the process of JAMB admission, having a SIM card is essential. Candidates generally need to get their profile codes via SMS.

However, if you've taken the JAMB before, say in 2018 or 2019, you might be unsure about the SIM you should use to retrieve or reactivate your profile code. This is especially confusing if you used different SIMs for each of those years.

In this post, I will help clear up this confusion by sharing what JAMB advises and drawing from my professional experience.

JAMB Recommends Using Your Last Registered Phone Number

Officially, JAMB advises that you should use the phone number you last used to gain admission.

For example, consider the following exchange:

Dípò Raji @itsdiporaji:

I registered for JAMB in 2018 and gained admission. I did another one in 2019 using two different numbers. Which one should I use to register for Direct Entry (DE)? I can't find the 2018 number I used to gain admission. Thank you.

JAMB @JAMBHQ:

You should use the phone number previously used to gain admission.

According to the student, he attempted JAMB in two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019, using different numbers each time. Now, ready to obtain the DE form, which also requires generating a profile code, he inquires about which of the two numbers to use.

In the instance above, the candidate applying for DE had to reuse the same phone number last used to gain admission. If you have not gained admission before but used a line for your last JAMB, you should use the same line again.

2018 and 2019 JAMB Did Not Require NIN

For students from 2018, 2019, or earlier, although a phone number or a SIM/line was used for JAMB registration, it's important to remember that there was no requirement for a National Identification Number (NIN). As a result, back then, you only needed a phone number for JAMB, without a profile code being attached to the phone or any NIN.

This method changed starting from 2020/2021. From then on, candidates are required to send their NIN to 55019/66019 to get profile codes which in turn will be used to buy PIN for their JAMB registration. This new method links each student to one NIN, one profile code, and one SIM.

If your last JAMB was before 2019 or years before, you are free to use any SIM to get your profile code if you intend to take another JAMB or process direct entry admission for further studies.

Why?

For your last JAMB, you were not tied to a NIN, profile code, or a SIM. You are therefore free to use the last SIM if you still have it, or use another SIM if you've lost it.

Candidates who took the JAMB in 2020, 2021, or later cannot do the same. They must use the same SIM, same email, same NIN, and the same profile code.

Conclusion

The guidance provided officially by JAMB in this scenario was correct. If you gained admission using a SIM, use the same SIM again. However, the board did not elaborate further, which might lead to some confusion.

But if you've lost the SIM and you're worried, it might not be an issue if your JAMB was in 2019 or earlier. You can still use another SIM.
