Is Adeyemi a University (Degree) or College (NCE)?

ADEYEMI College of Education is Not Yet a University

Some admission seekers are asking whether Adeyemi College of Education is a University or a College. Some want to know if the college runs just NCE or Degree inclusive. Some are curious to know whether it's a federal-owned or state-managed institution.

In short, there is a series of confusion about the school. This post will help you find the right answers to the questions above and a few other related concerns.

Let's take it from the real question. Adeyemi is a two-in-one higher institution. The institution runs both degree and NCE programmes. However, the NCE is solely administered by the college while the degree is in affiliation with Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

In brief, Adeyemi College of Education is a federal government higher education institution located in Ondo City, Ondo State. It is affiliated with Obafemi Awolowo University for its degree programmes.

The federal government of Nigeria under the Goodluck Jonathan presidency upgraded the College to a full-fledged university of education in May 2015. However, the new administration of President Mohammed Buhari decided to put the new status on hold in August 2015 because of the absence of an enabling law.

The National Assembly finally passed the Adeyemi Federal University Establishment bill in December 2018 and the bill awaited the assent of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (up to 2021).

ADEYEMI College of Education is Now a University

The institution's upgrade, as earlier noted, was delayed. But now, it has been fully upgraded to a university. With this, the name is now updated to "Adeyemi University of Education". Before now, the university's degree programme was formerly owned and run by Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife. Henceforth, the university should be able to run its own degree programme on its own.

After taking necessary statutory steps and recommendations, the management may discontinue the college (NCE) programme in order to run degree programmes only.

Is Adeyemi Degree Recognized as a University Programme?

The answer is YES.

As you might have already known, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) degrees/programmes are well recognized not only in Nigeria but also abroad. The same is applicable to her degree programmes in any of the affiliates.

Then, it's the university that's responsible for all the administrative and academic activities of the attendees.

As from now on, the university's independent degree remains as recognized as its former owner (OAU) if not better.

Will I Go for NYSC After Adeyemi Degree?

Yes, you will.

For those graduates that will be produced under OAU, Obafemi Awolowo University is in charge of mobilizing its graduates for National Service. This is why during NYSC registration, her graduates registered under OAU instead of ADEYEMI College.

I detailed this in my post, "Can I Serve at NYSC if I Attend Affiliate Campus Programme?".

The future graduates of the Adeyemi University of Education will be produced to service too (this time probably faster). Hence, if you're about to gain admission to the university under the new name, you're certain to be produced for national service.

And with these new changes, graduates on the waiting list will not be deprived of their clarion's call.

How Do I Choose Adeyemi Degree in JAMB?

Up to the 2021/2022 admission exercise, during JAMB registration, candidates can consider Adeyemi Degree (as affiliated with OAU) under the degree category (like other universities). It will appear as "Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (affl. with OAU Ile-Ife)". If you want to consider the College NCE programme instead, it will appear under the NCE category as "Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo".

During the post UTME however, candidates will use the same platform for their registrations. But you're open with options to choose between Degree and NCE. This is the way the college will know which one you want to be considered for. The JAMB cut-off mark for their post UTME is usually; Degree 180 and above and NCE a minimum of 140. The cut-off mark had just been changed to 200 and 120 for the degree and NCE admission seekers respectively.

After the changes are fully made, and the university bears its independent title, "Adeyemi University of Education", the same will continue except that the university will be chosen under degree and NCE independently without affiliating with OAU.

Duration of Programmes/Courses of Studies

For the degree courses, candidates spend 4 years. For the NCE, 3 years.

In most cases, NCE graduates from the college usually chose to continue their studies to the degree level at the college. However, they can continue their degree at other universities across the country if they choose.

Such candidates will have to obtain the JAMB direct entry form and consider any university of their interest while filling out the forms.
