Tuition (Fees) of The Top Federal Universities in Nigeria

As an average Nigerian parent, guardian, or concerned student, you should care to prefer a federal university over others as this will, not only now help now, but in the long run, save money.

It's in the nature of most Federal universities to continually reduce their tuition as students continue to higher levels in their studies. In other words, if you should spend #100,000 in year 1, a federal university may reduce that to #70,000, #50,000, and #30,000 for year 2, year 3, and year 4 respectively.

This trend is not common among state-owned and private-owned universities. For both, if there will be any reduction at all, it won't be anything significant.

So, let's see the tuition by all Nigerian Federal-owned universities.

There are over 40 Federal universities in Nigeria. Sincerely, these are the universities that are expected to charge less tuition than their state and private counterparts.

Note that the fees depend largely on courses being offered as, in most cases, science students are to pay higher than management students and those higher than art. Some professional courses e.g. Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, etc., may still require additional fees.

For example, as of the 2020/2021 session, the University of Ibadan tuition is as follows.

  1. Faculty of Agriculture: N34,500 - N43,000
  2. Faculty of Arts: N29,500 - N36,500
  3. Faculty of Education: N31,000 - N37,500
  4. Faculty of Law: N32,000 - N37,000
  5. Faculty of Pharmacy: N37,500 - N42,000
  6. Faculty of Science: N33,000 - N40,000
  7. Faculty of Social Sciences: N31,500 - N36,500
  8. College of Medicine: N40,000 - N50,000

However, this compilation is the baseline for these federal universities. Also, returning students (those already in the 200, 300, 400, or 500 levels) are usually required to pay less.

For instance, for the 2021/2022 cadmic session, the University of Abuja tuitions for freshers and returning students read as follows.

1. Faculty of Agriculture

  1. Fresh students: N41,000 - N43,500
  2. Returning students: N29,000 - N31,500

2. Faculty of Arts

  1. Fresh students: N39,500 - N42,000
  2. Returning students: N27,500 - N30,000

3. Faculty of Education

  1. Fresh students: N39,500 - N42,000
  2. Returning students: N27,500 - N30,000

Conclusion

The fees stated above are well-researched and verified. I've checked several universities' websites for their updated tuition before this work could be completed. However, with time, most universities do review their fees to implement some increment or, in rare cases, reduction.

With this figure, you can rest assured that, your proposed university will maintain it at least for five years.
