Can I Study Medicine, Nursing, Law, at Colleges of Education?

What Courses Can I Apply for at a College of Education
Some candidates have been asking whether they could choose courses like Law, Medicine, SLT, Business Administration, Accounting, etc at colleges of education. You’ll need to ask this question if you’re just starting out.

Candidates who have tried admissions before or who have been engaged with a career may not need to be asking if courses like English, Nursing, Medicine, Marketing, Pharmacy, Engineering, etc can be found or are offered at colleges of education around us.

If you belong to the former group, I’m here to shed some light on a few things about what and what courses you may or may not go for at a college of education.

Before then, let’s get the basics.

What is a College of Education (COE)?

College of education is a category of higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. Others include Universities, Polytechnics, Innovation Enterprise Institutes (IEI), Colleges of Health Technology, and Schools of Nursing.

Colleges of Education (COE) are responsible for producing graduates who are capable of teaching at our secondary and primary schools. They're awarded the Nigeria Certificates in Education (NCE) which gives the graduates the qualifications to be employed as teachers – especially at the primary level of Nigerian education.

What Courses Can I Apply for at a College of Education

Colleges of education are NOT meant to train other specialists than teachers. Hence, you may not be able to study your favorite Microbiology, Biochemistry, Nutrition/Dietetics, and so on at a college.

In other words, whatever course they offer is usually in education. Therefore, if they offer Mathematics, it will be in education. If they offer Biology, it will be in education.

The Nature of Education Courses at Colleges

You may as well be confused about the way colleges name their courses. In universities, for instance, a student offering education in Chemistry will tell you, “my course is Chemistry Education” or he may say, “Education and Chemistry”. This is not the same in Colleges of education.

Colleges combine two majors in naming their courses. For example, let’s see the pattern below.

  1. Biology/Chemistry instead of Biochemistry
  2. Chemistry/Mathematics usually called ChemistryMaths
  3. English/Social Studies usually called EnglishSos

You may find more of this combination on Emmanuel Alayande College of Education's list of courses.

However, colleges still name some courses with single words just like the universities. For example, a few colleges still have Agriculture (Double Major, Business Education, Accounting Education, Electrical and Electronics Education, Technical Education, etc.

And for colleges that run degree courses too, you will find enough courses with single names. For example,

  1. English Education
  2. Biology Education
  3. Chemistry Education
  4. Economics Education
  5. Physics Education
  6. And so on.

Conclusion

While seeking admission, you may be thinking the same courses are being offered across all higher institutions. This is not true. And for the college of education, you’re limited to education courses only. When you’re done, you’re more likely going to end up teaching except if you want to cross to some universities that still consider NCE graduates for non-education courses - through direct entry admissions.

If you insist on Medicine, Nursing, Economics, Accounting, etc., you may need to check your choice at any university or for some, at polytechnics.
