Are Schools of Nursing Running ND/HND Programme?

In very recent times, the atmosphere of admission and studies is changing in the schools and colleges of Nursing in Nigeria.

The programmes, being admitted to, are taking new looks. That's why many parents, guardians, and prospective nursing students are asking if schools of Nursing are now offering courses leading to the award of an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nursing.

This post will answer this question and shed more light on certain concerns related.

What You Should Get First About Schools of Nursing Programme

The schools of Nursing, which we're all used to, run among other courses, general or basic Nursing. This is a three-year course leading to the award of Registered Nurse certification.

With this qualification, we can safely say, you're equivalent to an ND or NCE holder of a polytechnic or college of education.

The implication is that you can work with this RN, just like an ND and NCE holder can work with theirs too.

In order to further their studies, RN holders can proceed to a university through Direct Entry to study Nursing, again, which will lead to the award of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. They can, as well, choose to obtain a post-RN midwifery form at the same or other schools of Nursing to have Registered Midwifery (RM).

This is similar to an ND or NCE holder who studies further by seeking university admission through Direct entry too or an ND holder who continues to the HND programme in the same polytechnic or any other.

But the story is changing for schools of Nursing these days. The new look is covered in the remaining post. Read on!

Some Schools of Nursing Are Now Awarding ND and HND

Just like the polytechnics, we know, and as detailed for the ND holder above, some colleges of Nursing are now offering programmes leading to the ward of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or Higher National Diploma (HND)

While some retain their Basic Nursing programme, as known before now, some still run ND/HND separately from basic Nursing while some now discontinue basic nursing and move entirely to award ND and HND in Nursing.

For example, the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing, Ile-Ife, the Nigerian Army College of Nursing, Yaba, Lagos, and a few others listed in the post, "List of Polytechnics and Colleges Offering Nursing in Nigeria" are now awarding ND and HND in Nursing.

With this trend, it shouldn't take decades to see other schools of nursing follow suit.

Speaking of the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Nursing by the colleges of Nursing, there are a few things to know that will change forever.

RecommendedJAMB Accredited Colleges of Health and Their Courses

1. Schools of Nursing ND/HND Will Be Offered By the Same Schools

Unlike the polytechnics that will award you ND after a two-year of studies and expect you to go for a year of industrial training before you pick the HND admission form for another two-year advanced training, schools and colleges of Nursing will run their ND/HND concurrently and uninterruptedly.

In other words, you may not be allowed to pick the HND form in another school of Nursing. Instead, you're to continue to your HND with your school. At the same time, there won't be any break in-between the two programmes unlike we have for the polytechnics i.e IT period.

2. Schools of Nursing Offering ND/HND Will Produce Graduates to NYSC

It's been the norm that RN holders, being graduates of schools of nursing with basic nursing, will not serve at NYSC. However, with the introduction and adoption of ND/HND Nursing, they're due to be posted for the clarion calls henceforth.

In other words, Basic Nursing is not enough to be qualified as a graduate capable of serving just like an ND or NCE holder.

Henceforth, schools that adopt the ND/HND awards in Nursing are now fully accredited to join the next NYSC ship just like the graduates i.e. HND holders of polytechnics.

Will ND/HND Nursing Be Equivalent to BSC Nursing

One of the issues being fought for decades by the polytechnics offering ND/HND in other courses is that their graduates are NOT recognized as equal to their university's counterparts i.e BSC holders.

Even though a few measures and policies had been made to bridge this gap and things seem to be working now in favour of the HND holders from these polytechnics, there is no way to assure any polytechnic graduates there won't be discrimination after all.

As a result, you should want to know if the ND/HND graduates in Nursing will suffer this same fate.

As a matter of fact, it's too early to conclude that this could be the case. However, from experience in the health sector, things should be under control.

As long as the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria is still in charge of administrations and laws governing schools of Nursing, they should enforce equality among their graduates with HND and those of universities.

  2. One more question I have though, is aren’t the schools offering OND/HND suppose to be listed as approved schools under Nursing/Midwffery council? Or is there another body that is in charge of OND/HND-offering schools? Thanks

    1. Yes, there is different board for the ND/HND Nursing approval. The body is National Board for Technical Education. Before this NBTE's approval, these schools of nursing are already approved for Nursing.
