Easier Admission Btw School of Nursing and University Nursing?

Nursing students in class
Some prospective applicants for Nursing had been asking questions. Among these is to know if admission into schools of Nursing is easier than admission to Nursing in universities.

In other to break this down, these candidates want to know which is easier to enter between schools of Nursing that are offering basic Nursing that leads to the ward of the Registered Nurses (RN) and universities offering Nursing Science that leads to a BSN or degree in Nursing.

It will require some level of real experience to answer this question. And luckily for you, you're in the right place.

In this post, I will be showing you how difficult or easy admissions by schools or colleges of nursing can be in comparison to when seeking admissions into universities to study Nursing and vice versa.

Schools or Colleges of Nursing Admissions can be More Difficult

Most schools of Nursing run 3-year basic or general Nursing with which after completion, you can obtain Direct entry to cross to university in order to have a BSC in Nursing.

The nature and processes of admissions for the basic nursing programme and the number of applicants that can be admitted based on the quotas given by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria will make admissions into this programme very difficult.

Let's be realistic, where 99 students, at maximum, will be admitted with 4,555 applicants, won't it be difficult to be among the lucky ones?

This is why it requires a certain level of man-know-man connection before most candidates will make it into schools of Nursing. This doesn't mean there are no candidates on merit. The number may not be as significant compared to man-know-man candidates.

Applicants, for some schools of Nursing, will have to write one entrance exam (and for some, two) and attend at least one interview before making the final list. It's, obviously, going to be difficult to swim through this river of traps being set by these managements if you must emerge on merits.

And if you scape through, for certain schools of nursing, they may still wait for you in their so-called weeding exams.

Admissions into Universities and Colleges Offering Nursing May not be as Difficult

Gaining admission into universities to study nursing will take the same procedures just as admissions for any other courses in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

In the same vein, the conditions of admission into nursing by universities are the same as admission into nursing by these few polytechnics awarding ND/HND in Nursing.

As a result, it's not as difficult to gain admission here because:

  1. you may not necessarily need to connect with anybody if you already got your UTME and post-UTME scores right
  2. JAMB is equally watching every university to protect candidates who merit admission from being deprived
  3. and apart from JAMB, some universities won't conduct another exam called post UTME. If you should cross JAMB, you won't be subjected to the further examination which may ruin your higher UTME score
  4. for these universities, if you have the best O'level grades, your aggregate point (after the calculation) will win you the space
  5. although there could quota for the universities too, that is not made public. And once you merit admission, you've scaped through

Conclusion

As an education consultant, I've met students and parents who innocently assume that admissions into schools of nursing for basic nursing (RN) should be easier than admissions into universities offering Nursing (BSN/Degree).

This is far from the truth.

Experience has shown that if you can inculcate the right amount of academic efforts for UTME and post UTME (if the university is conducting any), and you meet the cut-off mark for the Department of Nursing (especially universities that are transparent enough to release the cut-off marks to the public e.g. UI, UNIBEN, OAU), you should be on campus as deserved.

For the schools of Nursing, there may be more to it than your performance in exams and interviews. Nobody is watching the school management. They can do and undo.

    1. Yes, you can. However, very many universities will not accept two sittings for courses like Nursing, Medicine, Law etc. Read the post below.
