Do Universities Accept RM For Direct Entry Nursing?

This blog already contains a few posts on Registered Midwifery (RM). I differentiated between it and Registered Nursing in "Difference Btw Registered Nursing (RN) and Midwifery (RM)". I advised students not to opt for it if they have a better option like Registered Nursing or ND/HND in Nursing, in my post, "Should I Go for Midwifery Instead of Nursing?".

Well, considering the fact that many popular schools and colleges of nursing are still offering or running Registered Midwifery, you should want to know if you opt for it, will you be able to use that for direct entry (DE) admission into degree nursing at any university?

So, when a student recently asked, "Do schools accept direct entry for Nursing with RM certificate?", I knew he meant to know his position before obtaining an RM-program form or if he already had that, where it could be used for a degree in Nursing.

Let's talk here as usual.

Many Universities Offering Nursing Won't Accept RM

See, it's easy to think once you have RM, which arguably is equivalent to RN, you should be considered for direct entry admission into Nursing. Unfortunately, that's not true with many universities that are offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

In fact, searching through the official JAMB brochure, which is the primary book containing what individual university requires for admission, there is not a single university accepting midwifery for its Nursing program.

For instance, Imo State University requires a Registered Nurse certificate together with five credits at the ordinary level (SSCE) which must include English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at a credit level at not more than two sittings.

That's the DE requirement among all universities offering a full-time degree in Nursing. Additionally, a few will require more as stated below:

  1. 'A' Level passes in any two (2) of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics
  2. ND Upper Credit in Prosthesis and Orthopaedic Technology.
  3. Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Biology/Zoology, Chemistry, and Physics plus three (3) other 'O' Level credit passes in Mathematics, Physics, and English Language.

As you can see, no university states RM among its DE requirements for Nursing especially on a full-time course.

Part-Time Programs May Accept RM For Nursing

As you must have deduced, I've said for any full-time Nursing program, you'll need an RN, an A'level program, or a National Diploma in Prosthesis and Orthopaedic Technology. But if you can consider the part-time Nursing or distance learning option, you'll stand a better chance with your RM.

For instance, the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, accepts RM for its Open and Distance Learning program. The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, accepts it for its distance learning/part-time program in Nursing, so also does the University of Ibadan Distance Learning Center.

Conclusion

While Registered Midwifery (RM) offers a valuable skill set, aspiring nurses must be aware of its limitations in terms of direct entry (DE) admission into degree nursing programs. Despite its equivalence to Registered Nursing (RN) in practice, many universities offering Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs do not accept RM for DE admission.

This is evident in the stringent DE requirements outlined by various institutions, which prioritize RN certification or alternative qualifications such as 'A' level passes or specific diplomas. However, there are opportunities in part-time or distance learning nursing programs where RM may be accepted, emphasizing the importance of researching and selecting the right educational path.
