Can an Art or Commercial Student Study Nursing/Medicine?

As an art or a commercial student, your dream may be to become a nurse. But you learn late that people that eventually become nurses are from science classes.

You're not the only one in the mess. We can blame this on the lack of awareness and career talks to get students informed about their potential as art or social science students.

And now that you fall serious about medical or clinical disciplines, especially nursing science, will it be possible for you to become a nurse or a doctor with an art or commercial background?

This question is better put in any of the following formats:

  1. Is not too late for art or commercial students to become nurses or doctors?
  2. Will art O'level subjects be right to chase Nursing or Medicine admission?
  3. Won't JAMB UTME be a problem for art and social science students trying to cross into Nursing or Medicine?

In the post below, I will be answering these questions and shed light on related matters.

Art and Commercial Students Can Cross to Science at the Right Time

I think the time of crossing will matter if you're trying to become a nurse or a doctor as an art or a social science student. At what time of your study are you trying to change your discipline?

  1. Still in secondary school class such as SS 1, or 3?
  2. Already done in secondary school and now seeking admission with or without UTME?

Before we dive into details, let's get some background information as detailed below.

School of Nursing, Nursing in University and Medicine and Surgery Requires Specific SSCE Subjects

It could have been easy for all students; art, commercial, or science to go for Nursing or Medicine if not for the specific SSCE subjects which are the prerequisites to the courses.

English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are the 5 required subjects for Nursing, medicine, or any clinical or medical course. Hence, it's required of you before you can be admitted.

This is one of the reasons your dream of studying Nursing or Medicine may be sabotaged as an art or social science student.

And in the case of Nursing and Medicine at the University, the 4 JAMB subject combination must also align. As a result, prospective admission seekers are expected to choose, prepare and sit for English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in UTME.

Art and Commercial Students Usually are not Trained For the Selected Science Subjects

As an art or social science student, you're not groomed for the required science subjects while in secondary school. Your classes didn't include Chemistry and Physics, to say the least.

So, how do you go by this if you truly want to become a nurse or a doctor even though you'd not been prepared?

In the next sections, I'll be guiding you on the practical steps to take at this juncture.

If You're Still in SS Class, You Can Easily Change to Science

I've established that art or social science students can change to science and vice versa in my post, "Can I Change from Art to Science/Commercial and Vice Versa?". In the post, I gave you clues and the right approach to achieving that.

It is worth being repeated here that, if you're still in SS 1, 2, or 3, you can change your discipline with the right amount of extra study, effort, lessons, and dedication.

At this point, you just have to make up your mind that you're crossing to science and give it all it takes if you think it's worth the sacrifice.

If You're Already Done in School and Ready for JAMB

Unfortunately, you're not coming with the right knowledge, subjects in O'level, and mindset to study Nursing or Medicine if you're an art or commercial student already done in secondary school.

If you still want to be a nurse or a doctor notwithstanding, you have to stop chasing admission in the meantime. Let's refocus!

You will need to switch disciplines here. You will need to prepare, especially through lessons or enrollment from SS 1 or SS2 to equip yourself as a science student.

Then, you will write another WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or GCE to make the science subjects needed for your new discipline.

After this, no matter the time and effort it takes, you can seek admission for Nursing or Medicine with the right SSCE subjects and correct UTME subject combination.

Conclusion

Even though this post has concentrated on Nursing and Medicine, the same terms apply to any other related courses such as Pharmacy, Physiology, Physiotherapy, Anatomy, Medical Laboratory Technology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Radiography, Optometry, etc.

In all, you will need to make the right choice of class from SS 1 or you should be ready to change your course before the end of your secondary school education. And if already through with that, be ready to work and rework your way to the new discipline, giving it all it will take.

Fortunately, no matter your present academic stage, you can slow down and change your course, sit for the required SSCE subjects, and chase the new admission to become your dream nurse or doctor.
