Can I Study Abroad in Benin Republic, Togo, Cameroon, etc.?

I've always wanted to write this article, but I've now gathered enough evidence to support my stance on this matter. A few times, admission seekers have chatted with me to know my view on seeking admission to universities in Benin Republic, Abidjan, which is in Ivory Coast, Togo, Cameroon, etc.

These students are usually frustrated by the Nigerian education system and the difficulty in gaining admission not only to their preferred universities but also to their most desired courses. Of course, if you've been stung by JAMB and post-UTME, you'd want to find other ways to gain admission.

And since gaining admission to universities in Benin Republic, Togo, Cameroon, etc. won't require JAMB or be as difficult as what we experience in Nigeria, these neighboring countries offer the best alternative to Nigerian education.

But what exactly is my stand about going to these countries to study? In this post, I will not only give you my verdict but also add a few official pieces of evidence to buttress my position.

Their Education Quality is Substandard

If what you're after is quality education, Benin Republic, Togo, Cameroon, etc., are not the best for you as a Nigerian student. While there is no doubt that some of their universities can be standard enough to give you quality education, very many won't do you any good in the end.

Then, if I may ask, "how do you know the few that offer the best education?". See, the reality is that even at home, in Nigeria, not all universities are given equally recognition when it comes to the value they offer to students. With some, limited by resources such as lecturers, research facilities, etc., still struggle to meet the quality of education being offered by most premiere universities.

I bet, you can't identify these sets of poor universities in Nigeria. So, if you've to look beyond the Nigerian wall, how will you possibly be able to spot a scam when you see one?

Having personally interacted with many graduates from Cotonou and Lomé, I've come to the realization that most of their graduates were no different from what they were before leaving home - if not even worse. If you think that is a fallacy, a simple and further Google search will unveil more on my point.

Most Universities in Cotonou and Lomé Award Fake Certificates

Certifications are obviously fake if you just use a computer program to design, redesign, or edit a certificate. But, what do you call universities that will give you their original certificates even without attending any class be it online or offline?

Most of these universities are scams and that has really hurt the integrity of the education and awards by any of these universities. Even if, in your own case, you truly attend classes, upon graduation, what will be the perception of your degree in the labor market?

Just recently, an undercover reporter bagged a Cotonou university degree in 6 weeks without leaving home or any online class engagement. This case became so serious that the Nigerian government had to place an embargo on certificates from this country and a few others. With this step by the Ministry of Education, it was reported that over 15,000 Nigerian students out there were affected. They could include those who've graduated from the universities and those who are still studying.

Even if the government eventually lifts this ban, the impression will, for decades, linger in the memories of companies and organizations whom you may want to work with.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Beware of Substandard Education: While there may be reputable institutions in these countries, a significant number offer substandard education. This can result in graduates not being substantially better off than before their studies, potentially wasting time and resources.
  2. Difficulty in Identifying Quality Institutions: Just as it can be challenging to distinguish between high and low-quality universities in Nigeria, the same applies when considering institutions abroad, especially in the context of scams and fraudulent practices.
  3. Risk of Acquiring Fake Certificates: There is a notable risk of enrolling in universities that award fake or unearned degrees. This can have severe consequences, undermining the integrity of one's academic and professional credentials.
  4. Government and Labor Market Reactions: The Nigerian government has taken steps to embargo certificates from certain foreign institutions due to fraudulent practices. This has a lasting impact on the perception of such degrees in the labor market, potentially affecting employment opportunities for decades.
  5. Considerations Before Studying Abroad: It is crucial for students to thoroughly research and consider the reputation, accreditation, and overall quality of education of any foreign institution before committing to study abroad. Ensuring the chosen university enhances one's career prospects is essential.

The overarching message is one of caution: while seeking education abroad can be a worthwhile venture, it requires careful consideration and due diligence to avoid pitfalls and ensure the investment in one's future pays off.

What Do I Suggest Alternatively?

Given the concerns about seeking higher education in neighboring countries due to issues of substandard quality and fake certifications, here are some viable alternatives for Nigerian students looking for quality education and legitimate qualifications:

  1. Explore Scholarship Opportunities: There are numerous scholarship programs available for African students to study in reputable universities around the world. These scholarships often cover tuition, accommodation, and sometimes even provide stipends. Researching and applying for these scholarships can open doors to quality education in countries with well-established educational systems.
  2. Consider Distance Learning Programs: Many reputable universities across the globe offer distance learning programs that allow you to study from anywhere in the world. These programs provide flexibility, allowing students to balance their studies with other responsibilities. Ensure that the institution and the program are fully accredited.
  3. Look into Foundation Programs: Foundation programs are designed to prepare international students for undergraduate study in countries like the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and more. These programs help bridge any gaps in the educational systems between countries and can increase your chances of admission into undergraduate courses.
  4. Attend Regional Educational Fairs and Workshops: These events often feature representatives from universities around the world. They provide an opportunity to gather information, ask questions, and even secure admission offers. Attending such fairs can help you make informed decisions about your education abroad.
  5. Research Affordable Countries with Quality Education: Countries like Germany, Norway, and Finland offer affordable or even free tuition to international students while maintaining high educational standards. Researching such options can provide avenues to quality education without the financial burden typically associated with studying abroad.
  6. Apply to Nigerian Private Universities: Some private universities in Nigeria offer high-quality education, with some even having partnerships with international institutions. These universities may provide a more reliable alternative to public institutions without the need to study abroad.
  7. Utilize Online Learning Platforms: Platforms like Coursera, edX, and Udacity offer courses and degrees from top universities worldwide. Many of these courses are free, with the option to pay for certification. This can be a cost-effective way to gain knowledge from prestigious institutions.
  8. Engage in Exchange Programs: Some Nigerian universities have exchange programs with foreign institutions. Participating in these programs can offer international exposure and quality education for a semester or academic year.

By exploring these alternatives, Nigerian students can find suitable and reputable avenues for achieving their academic and professional goals without risking the pitfalls of enrolling in substandard or fraudulent institutions abroad.
