UTME/SSCE Subjects and Grades for Medicine and Surgery

There is the need to dedicate a separate post to the SSCE (O'level) subjects and grades required for Medicine and Surgery admissions. This is because there are a few things aspirants must know before putting in for the course.

While registering for the JAMB UTME, you can consider any of these universities for Medicine and Surgery. And if you're just considering changing institutions or courses, you're free to choose any of them.

However, you may have a few questions to be answered, such as:

  1. What are the SSCE subjects required for Medicine and Surgery?
  2. What specific grades to have from those subjects?
  3. Are these universities accepting two sittings (results) for Medicine and Surgery?
  4. Are there universities accepting D7, E8, or F9 in the required SSCE subjects?
  5. Can I use any of WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB or a combination of two for Medicine and Surgery?

In this post, I will be answering these questions and other related ones.

5 O'level Subjects Are Required for Medicine and Surgery

According to the official JAMB brochure, every aspirant of Medicine and Surgery must possess, namely:

  1. Mathematics
  2. English Language
  3. Biology
  4. Chemistry
  5. Physics

Accordingly, you must possess at least C6 in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Though, for some universities using the screening method of post UTME, the higher your grades the better.

And generally, WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB is acceptable for admissions into Medicine and Surgery. Where two sittings are acceptable by a university, it won't matter if you combine WAEC and WAEC or WAEC and NECO or with NATBTEB.

However, a few universities may want one sitting for this course. Some accept two. Some wave one subject in place of the other. This will be covered in the next section.

JAMB's and Universities' UTME Subjects Required For Medicine and Surgery

While selecting the subjects for Medicine and Surgery during the UTME registration, the system will strictly select:
English Language
Biology
Chemistry and,
Physics

These are are the required UTME subjects by the board (JAMB). This selection is generally accepted by all the universities offering Medicine as well.

But for three other universities, they accept as detailed below:

  1. Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja (NTNU) accepts Chemistry, Biology, and any other Science subject. This may be good for a candidate who had done Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology in UTME, for another course than Medicine, but now decide to change to Medicine.
  2. Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDU) (formerly the University of Sokoto), Sokoto State accepts Mathematics in lieu of Physics. This means if you don't write Physics in UTME but Mathetics, you can still change to UDU and choose Medicine.
  3. University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Maiduguri, Borno State accepts Mathematics in lieu of Physics. This means if you don't write Physics in UTME but Mathetics, you can still change to UNIMAID and choose Medicine.
