Can I Use My JAMB Score/Mark for 3 Years or More?

I have been receiving calls and texts on the same dilemma since it was proposed that the UTME result should be used for admission beyond the current admission year. In other words, the UTME result should be valid for 3 years or more. How many years will your JAMB result last for admission? Can I use my result twice?

Candidates want to know if their higher score in UTME can be considered for admission in the following admission year if they are not successful this year.

This will be the best for admission seekers if it is possible. Imagine the scenarios below.

UTME Result Ok But SSCE Result Not

Yemi wrote JAMB UTME while awaiting WAEC or NECO results. The UTME result was good! 250 and above was a wow performance of course.

The poor guy was disappointed when WAEC or NECO result was released. He got a D7 in English. That’s too bad for him since no school will give you a full-time undergraduate admission without at least 5 credit passes in SSCE including English and Mathematics (except a few).

Yemi is now thrown into confusion. He has to wait till the next admission exercise. He has to write another O’level exam to pay for his deficiency in English. Perhaps writing the next WAEC GCE, NECO GCE or NABTEB GCE will be the right take. However, these results will not meet up with the ongoing admission exercise.

This now poses the question, “Can I use my UTME result for more than one year?”

Post UTME/Screening Completed Before SSCE Result Released

A candidate was awaiting the NECO result or GCE result but before the result is released, his or her proposed school has completed their post UTME or screening exercises.

If you want to know if you can use your JAMB score beyond one year, the answer is NO – at least not yet.

Most students lately believed that JAMB results can now be used for 3 years or so. This is a misunderstanding of course.

What Actually Happened About 3 Years Validity of UTME Result

But you're hearing it from your friends, families, teachers, and groups that you can use it for more years. So what actually happened?

The Senate on Thursday 13th of October, 2016 extended the validity of the results of the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board by up to three years.

With this new law, if a candidate passes the 2017 and beyond examinations, the result would be valid up till 2020 or beyond.

However, in the following year, the registrar of the Joint Admissions And Matriculation Board, JAMB, Professor, Is-haq Oloyode said the UTME result cannot be used for admission after one year.

The registrar was responding to moves by the Senate to extend the lifetime function of a UTME result to three years.

Oloyede said this in Abuja at the stakeholders meeting with former JAMB members and civil society groups on the 2018/2019 admissions guidelines.

His basis of the argument was that the nature of UTME was to test a candidate’s academic ability rather than aptitude ability or IQ.

That was the end of the 3 years UTME result validity.

If you ask JAMB the same question, they will tell you JAMB results can only be used for one year. See the JAMB response to such a question below.

What is your fate then, if you can’t Gain Admission with your Higher Mark?

Sorry, dude!

If you can’t gain admission to your proposed school because of deficiencies in O’level result or your awaiting result can't meet up, consider:
  1. Change of institutions to schools whose admission exercises may be delayed until your awaiting result is finally released.
  2. Most private schools can accept applicants with this kind of delay if you can afford and approach them.
  3. If you don’t have any results awaited, you’ll have to rewrite UTME next year – after you had gotten your deficient result.
  4. You can also consider some other admission channels that awaiting results can work with. Such non-UTME admissions include IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge A’level programme, and Predegree.

Both UTME and SSCE Results  Were Good but No Admission was Given

David has a higher score in JAMB and all his O’level results are complete. Yet he was deprived of admissions.

I don’t doubt you must have heard of situations like this before - if you've not fallen victim. It’s not uncommon.

  1. As earlier mentioned, you can consider the change of institutions to other schools that can consider you. You might have been deprived because of higher competition for the course or school. Consider the change of institution to a less competitive course or school.
  2. If all proves absorptive, or you don't write the UTME for the year but you have SSCE result, you can consider IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge Advanced Level course, ND Daily part-time programme, Nursing Schools programmes, and Diploma or Foundation programmes of some institutions. All these admissions to universities or polytechnic alternatives do not require UTME.
