I Don't Meet Cut-Off, Will School Give Another Course?

When you don't meet the cut-off mark of your proposed course, you may want to know, ahead, if the school management will consider you for another course.

This is a thought you have if after calculating your screening point or seeing the departmental cut-off mark, you're a bit short.

A student, in your shoes, recently asked me the same in my pay-to-request-answer service. He was proposing Nursing at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti. His aggregate score was about 2 points below the usual score for the Department of Nursing.

He asked,

Is it possible or have you got such an experience if the management will give me the course I met or beat its cut-off mark such as Medical Laboratory Science or Physiology?

In this post, I'd like to guide him. I will not only talk about the university in question, but I'll address, to the best of my experience, the universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria. Let's consider the possibility of being offered another course in case you miss out on your main course.

Yes, Your School May Offer You Another Course

It's not unusual to see many schools, especially universities and colleges of education, transferring their aspirants from their initially chosen courses to others.

This happens under different circumstances:

  1. if you're short below your proposed course cut-off mark or departmental aggregate score. Here, the university decides whether to honor you with another course
  2. if the subject required for your course was not done in UTME and the school deems it fit to offer you a course with that subject combination
  3. if you change your mind, having realized you won't meet up to the initial course cut-off mark. Here, you change on the JAMB portal and on the school portal (where possible) before the lists are out.

In any of the above situations, your school may transfer you. My personal experience, as an education consultant, has taught me to expect such flexibility from universities and colleges of education. It's not common among the polytechnics.

RecommendedHow to Know If You're Offered Admission

But They May Not Transfer You As You'd Wanted

If you take note of the point in the question that our friend asked, he preferred to be transferred to the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) or Physiology if they wouldn't consider him for Nursing.

In most cases, this doesn't happen. The university reserves the right to transfer you to any course they want based on some other premises too.

  1. If your preferred course is not already occupied by candidates who merit it too, you be lucky to have that. Your school won't deprive students who already chose those lower courses for you who didn't choose those courses from the start even if you score higher than they. Those students picked lower courses from the start and they got the right scores for them. So, they deserve it before you.
  2. When schools introduce new courses or are accredited for new courses, they may want to send their unqualified students from higher competitive courses to that.
  3. Less competitive courses may need to be filled up too. Courses such as Chemistry, Biology, Plant Biology, Education, etc. might be less competitive in many schools. Those departments need to be filled too. Hence, you may be transferred to that. I've just talked to a girl who was transferred from Linguistics at the University of Ilorin to Social Work.

The Process of Transfer Admission Is Not Automatic

I've given a kind of automatic admission explanation in my post, "Schools That Admit if You Don't Meet Cut-Off Marks". In the case of transfer to another course, that won't just give your admission immediately. There are a few things you're expected to do before the school agrees that you're interested in the course you're transferred to.

  1. First, if they transfer you, you will see it under the "Transfer Approval" on the JAMB CAPS. This is why you should be checking this section of your JAMB portal when your school is releasing lists.
  2. Then, once transferred, the option will be active. You're to accept that by clicking on the "Accept" button/link
  3. After that, it's ideal (though not compulsory) to visit the nearest CBT center and change your course to the transferred course.
  4. After this, you'll be checking the JAMB admission status on the CAPS to know when the new course is finally given. There, you'll accept it and print your JAMB admission letters bearing the new course transferred to.

Conclusion

When you find yourself falling short of the cut-off mark for your desired course, there is a possibility that your school may offer you an alternative course. This practice is more common in universities and colleges of education than in polytechnics.

However, it's important to note that the decision to transfer you to another course is not guaranteed and depends on various factors, including subject requirements, course availability, and the competitiveness of the courses in question. While you may have preferences for specific alternative courses, the university ultimately has the discretion to choose the courses they offer you.

The process of transfer is not an automatic admission but involves several steps, including acceptance on the JAMB CAPS portal and potentially changing your course at a CBT center. So, if you find yourself in this situation, keep a close eye on your JAMB portal for updates and be prepared to adapt to the course offered to you.
