Change of Course and Change of Admission: Any Difference?

One of the things that confuse students or admission seekers is the terms "change of course" and "change of admission." In fact, some believe they're the same, whereas they're not. In this post, I will shed more light on the main difference between the two. Then, I will share the official JAMB explanation on this.

"Change of Course" Is Done With JAMB and School

It's possible to change a course on the JAMB portal. You'll need that if you're seeking admission to one course earlier but prefer another later - then, you change the course before being offered admission. Another case is if you're proposed on a course, and you're offered another or transferred to another. In this case, you'll change your course in the same year of admission right on the JAMB portal. Some students will first change courses on the JAMB portal before obtaining the school post-UTME so that they can take the same course on the school portal during the post-UTME or screening exercise. Some will first change the course on the school portal before returning to the JAMB portal to change the course so that things can align across the board. In all the cases above, what's relevant and required is the change of course – not the change of admission.

"Change of Admission" Is Done on JAMB Portal For a Course Change at 200 Level

Change of admission is not required by students who are just seeking admission. It's mainly for those who have recently gained admission to certain courses but later changed their courses going to 200 levels. Some students will apply for the change of course with their universities will going to 200-level. This an official on-campus way to move from one course to another. If granted by the university, the new course will be different from the one they gained admission to in the previous years. So, to ensure things align across the board, i.e., with the school and JAMB, they'll apply for the change of admission. After the change of admission with JAMB and approval, they'll be required to print a new JAMB admission letter from the JAMB portal, thereby nullifying the former admission letters.

JAMB Clarifies Between the "Change of Course" and the "Change of Admission"

In response to Bella Moonlight's inquiry, the official JAMB Twitter account, @JAMBHQ, provided clear guidance on the appropriate course of action for her brother's situation. The user reported that her brother initially gained admission to study pharmacy but switched to computer science in his second year. Although he altered his course at the university level, the department recorded him as still being in pharmacy upon graduation. When attempting to make a change of course through JAMB, he received a message instructing him to undergo a process referred to as "regularization."
The official response from @JAMBHQ advises the user that, in this scenario, the correct procedure is to apply for a "change of admission" rather than a "change of course." The user is further directed to visit any nearby JAMB office to initiate the necessary service. This guidance underscores the importance of aligning academic records across institutions and highlights the distinction between changing courses within a university and updating admission records with JAMB. It also emphasizes the need for in-person assistance at a JAMB office for this specific service. Following this advice will likely facilitate the resolution of the discrepancy in the brother's academic records.
