JAMB General Requirements for Direct Entry Admissions into Medicine and Sugurery

While seeking admission into universities offering Medicine and Surgery as a DE applicant, you're likely to be confused about the requirements. What is the course right for Medicine and Surgery? What are the universities offering Direct Entry applicants admissions for Medicine and Surgery? Will they accept HND, OND, NCE and related courses for Medince.


This post will be answering all these questions and related concerns.

Who Are the Direct Entry Applicants?

Before you can be called or qualified to be called DE aspirant, you must possess any of the following qualifications:


  1. Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE)
  2. Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB)
  3. School-Owned Diploma as UNIMAID and KWASU Diplomas
  4. Nigeria Certificate In Education (NCE)
  5. Ordinary National Diploma (OND)
  6. Higher National Diploma (HND)
  7. Bachelor of Science (BSC/BOS)
  8. and the likes


These are the acceptable qualifications to obtain a Direct Entry form. However, not all are accepted for Direct Entry into Medicine and Surgery.


In the next two sections of this article, I will detail the JAMB general requirements for DE and the specific DE requirements for Medicine and Surgery.

JAMB General Requirements for Direct Entry Admissions into Medicine and Sugurery

According to the official online JAMB brochure, candidates seeking direct entry admissions into Medicine and Surgery should possess one of:


  1. A' Level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology in addition to the UTME requirements. 
  2. BSC, BOS (i.e Bachelors of science), etc in the relevant programmes.

Specific DE Requirements for Medine by some Universities

Looking further, some universities were specific about what they will need from prospective applicants. Check the universities below for such terms and conditions.

  1. Abia State University Uturu (ABSU), Abia State states that all candidates no matter their mode of admission are required to have 'O' Level or its equivalent with credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at one (1) sitting.
  2. Abia State University Uturu (ABSU), Abia State accepts Degree in a related programme.
  3. Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State accepts Degree in a related programme.
  4. Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, Ogun State accepts Degree in a related programme.
  5. University of Abuja UNIABUJA), Abuja states that all candidates no matter their mode of admission are required to have 'O' Level or its equivalent with credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at one (1) sitting.
  6. University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State accepts (a) at least three (3) 'A' Level passes not more than C or a minimum of 12 points in Biology or Zoology, Physics and Chemistry at not more than one (1) sitting (b) at least a Second Class Upper Division from a recognised University in either B.Sc Biological Sciences or B.Sc. Medical Sciences.
  7. No Direct Entry for Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State 
  8. University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Port Harcourt, Rivers State accepts Three (3) A/Level passes in JUPEB or IJMB or GCE or HSC Passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology including UTME entry requirements. First Degree (Second Class Honours - Upper Division) in either Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry or any other related course including UTME entry requirements.
  9. Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, Benue State accepts a good Honours degree minimum of Second Class Upper in the relevant programme.
  10. Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos State accepts a good Honours degree minimum of Second Class Upper in the relevant programme. LASU requires a minimum of C in each of the subjects and will consider a Bachelor of Science with a minimum of second class upper division.
  11. University of Calabar (UNICAL), Calabar, Cross River State accepts Degree, not below a good Second Class Lower Division in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory, Biology, Zoology or Chemistry. Does not accept IJMB for Direct Entry.
  12. Ebonyi State University (EBSU) Anambra State accepts B.Sc Second Class Upper Division in any Biological Science plus ‘0’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at one (1) sitting.
  13. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Ilorin, Kwara State accepts B.Sc Second Class Honours in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, Zoology and other Basic Science programme. Also accepts a minimum aggregate of 13 points.
  14. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Ilorin, Kwara State (a) A’ Level passes in  Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology in addition to the UTME requirements (b) the minimum aggregate of 13 points in Biology, Chemistry and Physics at not more than one sitting at ‘A’ Level. (c) a minimum of B.Sc Second Class Upper Division in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology and zoology only. (d) The required UTME five (5) “O” Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology must be at one sitting.
  15. University of Jos (UNIJOS), Jos Plateau State states that all candidates no matter their mode of admission are required to have 'O' Level or its equivalent with credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at one (1) sitting.
  16. University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lago State accepts (a) JUPEB/‘A’ -level passes in Physics Chemistry and Biology (b) B.Sc. Degree (first class/second class upper) in Medical related fields.
  17. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Oyo State accepts 'A' Level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology plus the SSCE subjects to be considered for admission into 200 level.
  18. Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State accepts (a) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry, Biology and Physics with a minimum of 10 points at not more than two (2) sittings (b) a B.Sc. with a minimum of second class upper division in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics and Botany.
  19. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State accepts B.Sc. with a minimum of second class upper division in the relevant programme (Sciences).
  20. Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, Ogun State accepts a  CALABAR degree in Science not below Second Class Lower Division.
  21. Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDU) (formerly University of Sokoto), Sokoto State accepts 'A' Level pass in Mathematics in lieu of Physics
  22. University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Maiduguri, Borno State accepts 'A' Level pass in Mathematics in lieu of Physics
  23. Ebonyi State University (EBSU) Anambra State accepts 'A' Level pass in Mathematics in lieu of Physics
  24. Federal University Dutse (FUD/FED-DUTSE), Jigawa State‎ accepts: (a) three (3) 'A' Level subjects in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics obtained from IJMB (b) at least Second Class (Lower) degree in one of the Health Sciences programmes (e.g. Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Nursing etc), Biology, Biochemistry or Microbiology.
  25. Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, Osun State accepts (a) a minimum of 10 points in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology at 'A' Level or equivalents (b) first degree in relevant Biomedical Sciences Medical, paramedical, Biological, Chemical or Physical Sciences with not less than second class upper division.
  26. Edo State University Uzairue (EDSU/EUI), (formerly Edo University Iyamho), Edo Stat accepts; (a) 'A' Level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology in addition to UTME requirements (b) B.Sc. in relevant fields, not below Second Class Lower Division.
  27. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Kaduna State accepts ‘A’ Level/IJMB Passes in three subjects in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology.
  28. Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Delta State requires (a) First Degree in relevant Biological or   Physical Sciences discipline not less than   Second Class Upper Division may be considered in addition to the UTME requirement (b) Degree from Science Laboratory    Technology is not accepted.
