One of the competitive healthcare courses at universities is Optometry. We can compare the course with the likes of Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, and Pharmacy. However, only a few universities are offering it in Nigeria.

This post will be detailed with the list of the universities offering Optometry, the course background, SSCE and JAMB UTME subjects combination candidates must have or write before being offered the admission, and much more.

What is Optometry?

According to the London College of Optometrist, is the study of examining the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality, and problems with general health, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. They make a health assessment, offer clinical advice, prescribe spectacles or contact lenses, and refer patients for further treatment, when necessary.

Optometry is a university-based course rather than polytechnic or colleges in Nigeria. However, a few polytechnics and colleges are running the course at National Diploma or Higher level.

Admission seekers can consider choosing Optometry during the JAMB UTME/DE registration or while making a change of institutions and courses.

Universities Offering Optometry in Nigeria

Below is the list of universities 

1.University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State

This university will accept:

For Direct entry admission into 200 level: 

1. Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) of Biology, Zoology or Physics.
2. ND distinction from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT).
3. HND distinction  from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology in Polymer Chemistry and Science Laboratory Technology (SLT)
4. NCE distinction in Chemistry from a recognized College of Education. In addition, candidates should have credit.

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language,  Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.

2. Abia State University (ABSU), Abia State

The university accepts:

For Direct Entry admission into 200 level:

1. B.Sc in a relevant programme, HND/ND of  Opthalmonic and Dispensing

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language,  Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.

3. Arthur Jarvis University Calabar (ARTHUR-JARVIS), Cross Rivers State

The university accepts:

For Direct Entry admission into 200 level:

1. Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) of Biology, Zoology or Physics.

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language,  Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.

4. Bayero University Kano (BAYERO/BUK), Kano State

This university will accept:

For Direct entry admission into 200 level: 

1. Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) of Biology, Zoology or Physics.

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language,  Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.

5. Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State

This university will accept:

For Direct entry admission into 200 level:

1. At least three 'A' level passes not below Grade C in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. HND at Upper Credit level in health sciences
3. First Degree with at least Second Class Lower Division in health sciences.
4. Very good passes in three JUPEB subjects namely Chemistry, Biology and  Physics. It does not accept NCE. Candidates must in addition meet the 'O' Level requirements

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. FUTO requires at least five (5) 'O' Level credit passes in  English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology in not more than two (2) sittings.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.

6. Gregory University Uturu (GREGORY-UNI), Abia State

This university will accept:

For Direct entry admission into 200 level: 

1. Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) of Biology, Zoology, or Physics.

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language,  Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.

7. University of Ilorin (UILORIN), Kwara State

This university will accept:

For Direct entry admission into 200 level: 

1. Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) of Biology, Zoology or Physics.

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. UILORIN requires five (5) 'O' Level Credit passes at one sitting in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.

8. Madonna University (MADONNA-UNI), Okija Anambra State

The university will accept:

For Direct entry admission into 200 level: 

1. Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) of Biology, Zoology or Physics.

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language,  Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.

9. Novena University (NOVENA-UNI) Ogume, Delta State

The university will accept:

For Direct entry admission into 200 level: 

1. Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) of Biology, Zoology or Physics.

For 100 level admission through UTME: 

1. Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language,  Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
2. English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as UTME subjects.
