School of Nursing VS Nursing in University: Differences, Better One and List of Schools

WHICH ONE TO CONSIDER: RN, RM, BSN (BNSC NURSING) AND WHAT EACH ENTAILS

A student came to my office just recently to ask which one he should go for between BSC Nursing (through the universities offering degrees in Nursing) and Registered Nursing (through schools or colleges of Nursing (SON)).

If you’re in the same dilemma, I suggest you read this post to the very end. I had briefly answered this in my post, "Difference Between Registered Nursing (RN) and Registered Midwifery (RM)".

Schools or Colleges of Nursing and Midwifery

In Nigeria, if you give in to the school of nursing and midwifery, below is the picture of your life.

You will Obtain a Teaching Hospital Admission Form

  1. Schools of Nursing (SON) are run by university teaching hospitals (UTH) except for a few private ones. Such UTH will sell admission forms usually every year to admit a new set of students.
  2. After obtaining the form, you’re admitted through entrance exams, physical interviews, and medical tests.
  3. Now you’re to remain a nurse student for the next three academic years which are majorly practicals centered.
  4. After the completion of your nursing course and passing external exams called Hospital Final, you’re awarded the Registered Nurse (RN) certificate or license.

List of Schools and Colleges of Nursing in Nigeria

  1. University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital School of Nursing
  2. Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja School of Nursing
  3. Kaduna State College of Nursing
  4. Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing
  5. Oyo State College of Nursing, Eleyele Ibadan
  6. Ogun State School of Nursing and Midwifery
  7. University of Benin Teaching Hospital School of Nursing
  8. Benue State School of Nursing
  9. University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital School of Nursing
  10. Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing
  11. Kastina State School of Nursing and Midwifery
  12. Adamawa State College of Nursing and Midwifery
  13. University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital

Continue to University or School of Midwifery

Unfortunately, the RN is not equivalent to BSC or Degree Nursing. This is why you may still want to continue to a university. And if you’re contented with RN, you can use this to work as a staff nurse in any hospital and health center.
  1. If you choose to proceed to a university, you will have to obtain the JAMB Direct Entry form and choose a university of your interest.
  2. If offered admission, eventually, you will be admitted to 200 or 300 level Degree Nursing; depending, on school policies. See the Direct Entry Requirements for Nursing/Nursing Science
  3. Then you spend another 4 or 3 years to complete the BSN or Degree Nursing; after which you’ll be awarded Registered Midwifery and BSC Nursing or BSN.

You Can Add Register Midwifery (RM) to Registered Nursing (RN)

  1. Another stage after RN at a school of nursing is called a school of Midwifery. This is administered usually by the same teaching hospital.
  2. You can also consider this option if you don't want to cross to the university through the Direct entry form
  3. If you prefer this instead of obtaining JAMB DE form, you may need to spend another 1 or 2 years after RN for your midwifery course. Then you have two certificates altogether – RN and (Registered Midwifery) RM.

You Study Nursing at University Instead of School of Nursing

If you choose university Nursing instead of the school of Nursing/ midwifery, below is the picture of your journey.

You Will Obtain JAMB UTME Form

  1. You’ll have to register UTME for the admission year, like any other candidates seeking admission into other courses.
  2. If you score the required mark of your proposed school - usually 200 and above, you then obtain a post UTME form and take their post UTME test where required. Schools such as OAU, UI, UNILAG, ABU, UNIBEN, etc conduct post UTME while schools like UNIOSUN, KWASU, etc do not.
  3. If you’re eventually admitted, you’ll be running the course for 5 years after which you will be awarded three certificates - RN, RM, and (Bachelor in Nursing) BSN.

Career/Jobs: Your Fate with BSC Nursing and School of Nursing/Midwifery

Your academic journey has finally come to an end. You’re done with your nursing degree or midwifery. Here is the picture of what is to come. What is next in the labor market or at work?

Experience has shown that graduates of universities are senior officers above those who completed RN only - or together with RM.

This means, if we have a staff with RN and RM (or together) who had been working for ten years or more, she will eventually be a subordinate or junior colleague to new staff with BSC Nursing.

Sir do you suggest I finish up and go to a nursing school or apply for 2nd degree..or I should drop out and go to a nursing school please sir I really need your advice..thanks

    2. In brief, while still running your Zoology, obtain a new JAMB and process Nursing. If it works out, drop out and move for your Nursing. As for the school of Nursing, I prefer Nursing in universities to that. Admission through JAMB is is usually easier than school of nursing especially if you don't have external helps. read the posts below for more.

    1. It's possible through foreign top-up degree. I'm not sure any Nigerian university will admit you to the 500 level in order to spend just one year. But abroad, top-up degree can save you the time. For more on this read the post through the link below.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Both are based on practical and theories. BSN is a five-year programme while RN is a three-year course. RN is equivalent to one-year of BSN.

Surgical nursing is usually a certificate course opened to holders of RN or RM. After your RN, you can opt-in for post Basic nursing course in Surgical Nursing.

Ok sir what if I have my RN degree is it easy for to get a job opportunity abroad because here in Nigeria we pay staff in accordance to the certificate not capabilities but not the same at uk.At abroad you are gonna paid according to your capability so in my own view a student with RN that went through so much practicals is much more better than a student with Bsc result that just depends on theory

  55. If you have RN is good and if you have BSn is great, I just don't understand qthe much talks about RN vs BSN, I have seen nurse with RN the is going well in live if you talk about uni we all know how the admissions process works in Nigeria e.g you will see a university with a admission quota of 70 and see 400 to 500 student writing that same post utme and Evan do you pass both the jamb and utme it only takes the Grace of God for you to get admitted into nursing program ending up spending 3 to 4 years with jamb.
So if you have a RN you can get DE or you can also go for RM after that go for a post basic nursing exams.

    1. They will issue both ND in Nursing and HND in Nursing. You will go to NYSC just like every other BSC and HND holders.

  74. What is the difference between the degrees awarded in Benin Republic and that of Nigerian Universities considering the diffeernce in number of years spent in the University

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, there is usually a difference. In short, if you do Nursing in Benin republic, getting back to Nigeria to work, they work, you'll be required to top-up your degree in Nigeria first. By this, you will have to obtain direct entry form and be admitted to 200 level or if you're lucky to 300 level. Then, you spend more 4/3 years to have Nigerian BSC in Nursing

But am really confused now sir because am planning on rewriting jamb next year and am also getting my back degree in industrial chemistry someone told me that if I rewrite jamb before the completion of a degree I won't be given a bsc for the course am studing presently the would annul my certificate and I don't want that

    1. The person that told you that was lying. You can write JAMB at any time of your degree course and you can be offered admission if you merit the admission. You can then decide to complete your first degree and run your new degree too if you like. And you may discontinue one for the other. Read ore through the links below.

  77. Please sir, is it possible to study bsc nursing online after going to nursing school?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'm told there's a difference between school if nursing and college of nursing...
Because college of nursing offers ND and HND nursing and students spend four years...
They are offered RN/RM and RPHN.
They do a one year internship in the hospital and they go for service...
If they want to proceed to msc nursing.. they first do a one year PGD nursing and proceed to Msc nursing while those in SCHOOL OF NURSING are not offered any academic certificates like bsc or ND or hnd...
They are only offered a testimonial from their institution and they are offered RN certificate only...
    How true is this please?
