How Does NDA Set Questions for Aspirants?

NDA exam session
When a prospective NDA student chatted with me to know the subjects NDA would test him on in the entrance exam, I knew he was not the only one in this confusion. After that, some students dropped by to ask the related questions. What are the subjects that NDA will test students on? Are we going to write the same questions? Is there going to be a difference between the questions that will be given to science, commercial/social science, management, and arts students?

These are similar questions I've received so far. In this post, I will be answering these questions. Be informed that you can also buy the past questions and answers to the academy in its PDF format by just clicking here

All Applicants Will Be Tested on the Use of English

Regardless of your course or faculty, during the NDA entrance exams, you'll be given the question booklet requiring you to take English language questions.

This could be pretty easy to guess as most exams, even JAMB UTME, will require applicants to take English no matter the course they propose. The same applies to NDA entrance tests.

Generally, the questions are in two parts. The first part usually tagged "PART ONE" is mainly English and it's compulsory for all aspirants.

PART ONE — USE OF ENGLISH — All candidates must answer the questions in Part One.

Above is the front-paper instruction to all students taking the exam in 2023. Apparently, the same will be applicable for years after as it's been for years before.

Every Applicant Will Take 3 More Subjects Based on the Proposed Course

Apart from English, which is compulsory, every student must take 3 more subjects (making 4 in all). However, the other three subjects must align with the course you propose at the academy.

Even though I will break things down below, the three subjects you must take are easy to know since it's most likely the same subjects that you will sit for in JAMB UTME. Don't forget your JAMB subjects are four too, and it includes English as a compulsory choice for all.

Below is the instruction that will be given to you in PART TWO of your NDA questions

1 Candidates for the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences

Candidates for Arts & Social Sciences are to answer all questions in any 3 of the following subjects that are related to the candidate’s chosen course:

  1. Mathematics (Compulsory for Psychology candidates)
  2. Economics
  3. Geography
  4. History
  5. Government
  6. French
  7. Biology - (Compulsory for Psychology candidates)
  8. Arabic

NB: This means if your faculty is Social Science or Arts, except for those proposing "Psychology" which both Mathematics and Biology are compulsory for, you can answer any three of the above subjects. If you need my professional advice, take the one directly corresponding with the one you chose in JAMB UTME if your JAMB combination is correct.

2. Candidates for the Faculty of Science

Candidates for Science are to answer questions according to your course as follows:

  1. Mathematics — (Mathematics and any 2 of Physics, Chemistry, and Economics).
  2. Physics (Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry or Biology).
  3. Chemistry (Chemistry and any 2 of Physics, Biology, or Mathematics).
  4. Biology (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics).
  5. Biotechnology (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics).

NB: By implication, the subject or subjects before the word "and" are compulsory. Then, you can add one or two from the subjects after the word "and".

3. Candidates for the Faculty of Engineering and Technology

Candidates for Engineering are to answer questions in the following subjects:

  1. Mathematics,
  2. Physics, and
  3. Chemistry

NB: This means engineering students are not allowed to take any other subjects other than the ones listed above.

4. Candidates for the Faculty of Management Science

Candidates for management science are to answer questions according to your course as follows:
  1. Economics (Economics and any 2 of Government, Mathematics, Geography)
  2. Accounting (Mathematics and any 2 of Government, Economics, and History)
  3. Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Economics, Mathematics, and any of Geography, Government, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Economics, or History)
  4. Management Sciences (Mathematics, Economics, and any of Geography, Government, or History)

NB: By implication, the subject or subjects before the word "and" are compulsory. Then, you can add one or two from the subjects after the word "and".

5. Candidates for the Faculty of Military Science and Interdisciplinary Studies

Candidates for military science and multi-disciplinary studies are to answer questions according to your course as follows:

  1. Computer Science (Mathematics, Physics, and one of Biology, Chemistry, Economics, or Geography)
  2. Cyber Security (Mathematics, Physics, and one of Biology, Chemistry, Economics, or Geography)
  3. Intelligence and Security Science (Government and any 2 of Mathematics, Economics, Geography, History, French, Biology, or Arabic)

NB: By implication, the subject or subjects before the word "and" are compulsory. Then, you can add one or two from the subjects after the word "and".

As you can see, it's important to know your course and the faculty it belongs to so that you can flow these instructions when the time comes. In the past questions and answers (the compendium), you'll also see the correct subject combinations for each faculty and course.

Key Takeaways

  1. English Language Test: Regardless of your chosen course or faculty, all NDA applicants must take an English language test. This is a common requirement similar to other entrance exams like JAMB UTME.
  2. Subject Requirements: In addition to English, applicants must take three more subjects, making a total of four subjects. These subjects must align with the course the applicant is proposing.
  3. Subject Options: The subjects applicants choose will vary based on their faculty and proposed course. The specific subjects required for each faculty are outlined, and applicants must select accordingly.
  4. Importance of Course and Faculty Knowledge: Applicants must understand their chosen course and the faculty it belongs to. This knowledge will help them select the appropriate subjects and navigate the exam requirements effectively.
  5. Availability of Past Questions and Answers: Applicants are encouraged to access past questions and answers compendium, which provides insights into the correct subject combinations for each faculty and course. This resource can aid in preparation for the entrance exams.

Additional Tips:

  1. Start Early: Begin your preparation well in advance to cover all subjects thoroughly and avoid last-minute stress.
  2. Focus on Weak Areas: Identify your weaker subjects and allocate more time for their preparation to improve your overall performance.
  3. Practice Regularly: Regular practice with mock tests and previous years' question papers will help you familiarize yourself with the exam pattern and enhance your speed and accuracy.
  4. Seek Guidance: If you encounter difficulties or have doubts, don't hesitate to seek guidance from teachers, mentors, or coaching centers.
  5. Stay Calm and Confident: Maintain a positive mindset and stay confident throughout your preparation and during the exam. Keeping calm will help you think clearly and perform better on the day of the exam.
