How to Gain Admissions into ATBU (UTME, DE, and Others)

Guide to Gaining Admission to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU)
ATBU Logo
Writing about Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, Bauchi State is straightforward and uncomplicated. While the admission processes are not intricate, understanding the step-by-step procedures is crucial for a successful admission. Keep in mind that admission might be cost-free, but it requires proper execution on your part.

Over the past two decades, I've facilitated the admission of a number of students to this university. Generally, candidates from the southwest tend to hesitate about pursuing degrees up north unless obtaining a spot closer to home becomes challenging. However, when my students attempted, success often followed.

To guide you through the admission process at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, I'll outline three essential steps. Pay close attention and adhere to these steps to maximize your chances of securing admission. I can assure you that following this guide diligently will significantly increase your likelihood of gaining admission.

The steps are as follows:

  1. Ensure Your O’level Results Are Complete
  2. Choose ATBU in UTME and Attain a Score of 180 or Above
  3. Register for ATBU Post UTME Screening
  • Admission to ATBU as Direct Entry Applicants
  • Admission to ATBU with Connections or Influence

Summary of The Guide to Gaining Admission Into Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University

For those that may not have enough time to read to the end of this long post, even though I advise you to do, here is what you can take home in summary.

To gain admission into ATBU, follow these steps:

  1. Meet the general admission requirements: The first step is to ensure that you meet the general admission requirements. These requirements include having at least five credits in relevant subjects at O'level (WAEC, NECO, or GCE) in not more than two sittings.
  2. Choose a Course: Decide on the course you want to study at ATBU. Make sure you have the necessary qualifications and meet the admission requirements for the course.
  3. Obtain JAMB UTME Form: You must obtain the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) form and sit for the exam.
  4. Apply for Post-UTME screening: After taking the JAMB UTME, you need to apply for ATBU's post-UTME screening exercise. The screening exercise is usually advertised on the school's website or in national newspapers. You will be required to pay a screening fee and upload your O'level and JAMB results.
  5. Wait for the admission list: After the screening exercise, ATBU will release its admission list. If you are offered admission, you will be required to pay an acceptance fee and complete other registration procedures.

In short, to gain admission into ATBU, you need to meet the general admission requirements, obtain the JAMB UTME form, apply for post-UTME screening, attend the screening exercise, and wait for the admission list.

1. Let Your O’level Results Be Complete

Are they complete?

Like any other university, the SSCE result is compulsory for admission. However, not all schools accept all O’level results. By this I mean, some schools only recon with WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and GCE.

Some say you can use any O’level results, but they’re not faithful about it. They say that in order to hide things from the public or to avoid wrath from the concerned bodies.

Whereas, ATBU consistently accepts all O’level results and any possible combinations. For example, you can combine NECO with NABTEB, WAEC with NECO, or NABTEB, etc.

5 O'level Credit Passes

You need 5 credit passes in O’level subjects relevant to your proposed course in the school. The allows ordinary passes in SSCE (certain subjects) for some courses.

JAMB brochure has details on this; see it online here. I've also compiled the JAMB Brochure For Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Bauchi State.

Conditions of O’level requirements for each course at ATBU are well detailed in the JAMB brochure. You can check my post on “JAMB Brochure: How to Study it to Avoid Admission Errors” as a guide to know what to look for in the JAMB brochure.

2. Choose ATBU in UTME and Score 180 or Above

Of course, you need to write UTME/DE before gaining admission to the university. But what you need to get here includes:

Choose the University as Your First

I’m not sure if ATBU is made available by JAMB under the second choice category. Even if it’s possible to choose it as the second choice, please don’t. No school is accepting second-choice candidates any longer - most especially these sets of top universities in Nigeria.

Truth be told, most schools cannot even afford to accommodate all their first-choice candidates. Why will they worry about second-choice applicants?

Choose Your Course at ATBU

You only have ONE course to choose from, then choose wisely. Of course, almost all candidates know what they want to study in the school before obtaining the JAMB form.

Recommended: 50+ Courses Available for Admission at ATBU (Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University)

Yet, I’ll advise you to study the brochure in order to answer the questions below:

  1. Is the course available at ATBU?
  2. What are the required SSCE subjects for it?
  3. What are the UTME subjects you must write for the course?
  4. Does ATBU have some conditions for her O’level and UTME subjects different from other schools?

If however you don't want to study the brochure or you don't have access to one, use this JAMB eligibility status checker to see if you're qualified for the course you're chasing at the university.

Using that method is faster and safer.

Score 180 or Above in Your UTME

Most federal universities only accept 200 or above in UTME; the likes of UI, UNIBEN, UNILAG, and OAU to mention a few. But your beloved ATBU is friendly with 180. Aren’t they?

However, there’s a problem with that.

The majority of applicants who had taken other schools requiring 200 or above but failed to meet up would finally change institutions to the likes of ATBU. This will then increase their applicants considerably and make admission more competitive.

That's why you have to go beyond 180 in order to stand a higher chance of being offered admission eventually.

3. Register for ATBU Screening

Till now, ATBU only conducted post-UTME screening rather than exams. By this, I mean the school only asks you to fill out the form online when its screening form is on sale. Hence, no exams!

This is usually the form the university post UTME screening will take
ATBU Post UTME screening announcement in the 2018/2019 session

Apart from the online screening, you're not to do any other thing than start following your admission status on JAMB CAPS.

Then, If you’re admitted, you will be on campus for physical screening - which is more or less the freshers' documentation/screening. You’ll be there with the likes of items listed below:

  1. Post-UTME registration print-out
  2. O’level (SSCE) results (scratch cards to check them online)
  3. UTME result print-out
  4. Local government Identification
  5. Birth Certificate
  6. and passport photos

If you're curious to know how they will give admission without any exams, ATBU will rate you based on your performance in SSCE, and UTME results (and if you belong to their catchments or less educated states).

I have covered catchment areas and educationally less developed states in my post, "Admissions Based on Educationally Less Developed States, Catchment Areas, and Merit".

Their calculation and selection analysis may not be made public. Yet, students on campus know they have been admitted justly.

Wishing you luck!

Gain Admission to ATBU as a Direct Entry Applicant

This section doesn’t concern UTME candidates. So skip.

Qualified direct entry applicants are those who had completed their BSC, HND, ND, NCE, IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge A’level, Foundation, etc. in a school and decided to proceed to the university to continue with their courses or related ones.

To seek admission to ATBU as a direct entry applicant, you must also:

  1. obtain the JAMB form. Yours is called the JAMB Direct entry form instead of the JAMB UTME form.
  2. register at any CBT center nationwide
  3. register for Post DE screening; at the same time, the UTME applicants are registering too.

Obviously, before you can apply for ATBU post-DE, you must meet the following conditions:

  1. Have a minimum of lower credit for ND holders
  2. Have Merit grade for Diploma
  3. 9 points in NCE or IJMB

Kindly, visit, study, and understand the JAMB brochure or check your eligibility (as explained above) for further information.

Experience has shown that ATBU IJMB and Diploma candidates are more favored in Direct Entry admission. However, this doesn't mean they don't consider outsiders. You're in the right place if you meet their requirements.

Gain Admission to ATBU with Connection or Influence

Save yourself from being scammed - don’t look for cheap admission. Admission, to a university for that matter, shouldn’t be easier than this my brothers and sisters. No post-UTME, only UTME and 180 or above. Then, what else do you want?

I’m not saying you can’t see a lecturer to help you with admission at ATBU. But you’re more likely going to be scammed or left disappointed.

Close your mind, and face the reality. Give ATBU a good O’level result, 180 plus in UMTE, then see you on the list.

NOTE: If you're not so lucky on their merit list (especially for some competitive courses) if you don’t belong to their catchment areas or less educated states. Knowing this, you may consider a change of course to a less competitive course.
