Do Colleges of Health Run Part-Time Programmes?

One of the favorite chases of admission seekers in Nigeria is the College of Health Technology. Considering the number of inviting courses available at the colleges, you should want to try your luck.

However, for some of these colleges, JAMB UTME is compulsory. And for many that don't compulsory JAMB for all their courses, one or two may be out of your reach if you don't write JAMB or chose the college in UTME.

Even for the courses that won't ask for JAMB, passing the entrance exams of these colleges is as difficult as any of the tests out there.

As a result, a few aspirants are trying to consider the daily part-time option. And those working may want to check if they can run their courses on a weekend basis.

These candidates are possibly aware that the daily part-time (DPT) or weekend part-time (PT) programme:

  1. won't require you to write JAMB or consider the college in JAMB'
  2. may not require writing entrance exams
  3. may still allow you to go NYSC if you run the HND full-time or you do the direct entry admission.

However, they don't know if there are colleges of health admitting on a daily part-time or weekend part-time basis. And if there are any, what will be their admission requirements and processes?

In this post, I will be answering your questions and shedding light on certain concerns.

Colleges of Health Technology Don't Run Part-Time Programmes

Except in cases of mature students, who are already working, but want to go on short courses (e.g. advanced diploma), there is no record of a college of health that is admitting students into a part-time course (be it daily or weekend).

The mature students, earlier mentioned, are people who are already working in the health sector, but wish to upgrade, or get promotions. These set of students can opt-in for certificate courses that are just short-termed e.g. 3-month, 1-month, 2-week. These programmes are usually done on a part-time basis.

However, for programmes such as CHEW, Health Assistant, Laboratory Technician etc., all colleges of health run them on a full-time basis.

You Can Do Health Courses On Part-Time in Polytechnics Instead

Some candidates are not just after colleges of health for love's sake. Rather, they're after certain courses. They're chasing colleges of health because they're aware such courses are mostly run there.

I have good news for you. You can run some health courses in polytechnics and on a part-time basis especially daily.

A few colleges of health courses that are also offered in certain polytechnics include:

  1. Science Laboratory Technology
  2. Nutrition and Dietetics
  3. Optometry
  4. Pharmaceutical Technology
  5. Veterinary Laboratory Technology e.g. Federal College Of Animal Health And Production Technology VOM Plateau State

The above-listed are health-based courses you can consider in various polytechnics on a part-time basis. While you may run it on a daily part-time (e.g. Federal Polytechnic Ede, Moshood Abiola Polytechnics Abeokuta, etc.), only a few (if any) may do these on a weekend part-time basis.

Conclusion

You won't be lucky to see a college of health technology that will admit an SSCE holder aspiring to study any of its courses on a part-time basis. Such provisions are only made for advanced students on short courses.

And even though you have polytechnics who can offer you a few health tech-based courses on a part-time, you may be lucky if you want to do such on a weekend basis.
