List of Schools Offering Nursing On Part-Time Basis

You're here to see the list of schools/colleges of nursing you can attend on a part-time basis or the list of universities you can study nursing with on a part-time basis.

And yes, you'll have access to that in a bit. However, there are a few things to know before picking on such schools, universities, or programmes. So, let's start with that.

You Can Only Study Nursing at Two Institutions

Nursing as a course can only be studied at

1. schools/colleges of nursing, and 
2. universities offering Nursing Science.

Colleges of health technology, polytechnics, colleges of education, and innovation enterprise institutions are all excluded from running nursing as a course.

Hence, you're only limited to schools/colleges of nursing and universities running nursing to try your luck.

However, generally, all schools and universities that offer nursing run it on a full-time basis. This is because this course is intensive and is originally meant to be learned on a regular and full-time basis.

Of course, over time, some universities started offering Nursing Science on a part-time basis. But there is a clause to that which will equally be discussed shortly.

Schools and Colleges of Nursing Don't Run Nursing on Part-time Basis

As for the schools and colleges of nursing that run basic nursing and/or midwifery programme and those running ND/HND in Nursing, there is no such opportunity to be admitted or study on a part-time basis.

Basic nursing and basic midwifery are three-year full-time courses that will require students to be within the school premises (usually hostels) when the programme is ongoing.

Students are expected to be in classes/clinics from Monday to Saturday like any other conventional full-time academic programme.

The same is applicable to the schools and colleges of nursing running ND/HND in nursing. You're to be admitted and run your 4-year ND/HND programme uninterruptedly and on a full-time basis.

To date, no school or college of nursing is running basic nursing and basic (leading to the award of the registered nursing and registered midwifery respectively) and National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) on a part-time basis.

Hence, if you're interested in any of the programmes/awards above, I'm sorry to tell you that they can only be achieved on a full-time basis.

Some Universities Running Nursing Will Admit You On Part-Time

Apart from basic nursing, basic midwifery, and ND/HND in Nursing, another qualification is the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN or BSCN)

Only universities award the latter. This can be earned both on a full-time basis (in all these universities offering Nursing Science) and on a part-time basis (at a few of them).

Among the few universities offering Nursing Science on a part-time basis are:

1. Bayero University, Kano
2. University of Ibadan
3. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife
4. Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso
5. National Open University of Nigeria
6. Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki
7. Babcock University Ilishan Remo

Unfortunately though, while schools and colleges of nursing admit students using their SSCE results only, these universities will accept, in addition to SSCE results, other qualifications such as RN, RM, Orthopedics, etc. And that's the clause I mentioned earlier!

Let's break this down.

Universities Offering Nursing, on Part-time, Only Admit to 200 Level

Nursing in universities is a 5-year course. This starts from the 100-level if you are being admitted on a full-time basis (using SSCE and JAMB). But on a part-time basis, it starts from the 200-level which will only be opened to candidates who must have finished basic nursing, basic midwifery, or ND/HND in Nursing.

Hence, if you're seeking admission for Nursing on a part-time or distance learning but with just SSCE, you won't be lucky because such is not yet available.

Luckily, if after completing your basic nursing, basic midwifery, ND/HND in Nursing, ND in Orthopedics, and related qualification, you wish to further your studies on a part-time, you should be lucky with the above-listed universities.

Part-Time Nursing Requirements According to the Universities

1. University of Ibadan (UI DLC) requires applicants to have completed the three-year General Nursing programme in an accredited School of Nursing, and be registered with and currently licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to practice. Candidates must have the Senior Secondary School Certificate or equivalent with credit in the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics (Physics may be waived for candidates who obtained NRN certificate before 1990)
2. Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH ODL) requires applicants to possess at least five (5) credit passes in SSCE/GCE/NECO at not more than two sittings in relevant subjects. In addition, applicants should possess a Registered Nurse Certificate (RN) or its equivalent.
3. National Open University (NOUN) requires applicants to possess at least credits in Biology, Chemistry, English Language, Mathematics, and Physics. In addition to that, they must be a Registered Nurse (RN)
4. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU DLC) requires applicants to be nurses registered by the Nursing and Midwifery, Council of Nigeria (RN/RPN/RM/RPHN, etc.). Applicants must possess 'O' Level Credit in five (5) subjects obtained at NO MORE THAN TWO SITTINGS.
5. Bayero University, Kano (BUK ODL) requires applicants to possess Nursing Certificate. Candidates must have credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
6. Ebonyi State University (Work & Study Programme) requires candidates with registered Nursing (RN) Certificate only). Admission into the Work and Study Programme (WASP) requires (5) O’ Level Credit passes in relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics at the Ordinary Level (SSCE, NECO, GCE, and NABTEB,). The O’ Level credit passes are to be obtained in not more than two (2) sittings.
7. Babcock University (Conversion Programme) requires applicants to be Registered Nurses (RN) with the N&MCN. In addition, possession of at least one post-RN certification e.g. Registered Midwife (RM) Registered Public Health Nurse (RPHN,) and Registered Psychiatric Nurse would be an advantage. Candidates must equally possess satisfactory results at the senior secondary school certificate examination (SSCE) or its equivalent in five subjects, at not more than two sittings, which must include English language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.

Conclusion

Studying Nursing on a part-time basis is possible, though not for the basic nursing, basic midwifery, and ND/HND in Nursing but rather for the degree in Nursing.

However, not all universities offering Nursing Science has the provision for such a part-time or distance learning avenue. To date, the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, and a few others, (already covered in the post), will admit you for Nursing on a part-time or distance learning basis.

Unfortunately, this is not available to the holders of senior secondary school results only, the candidate must have equally possessed a basic nursing/midwifery certificate, ND/HND in Nursing or Orthopedics.
