Is NIN Compulsory for 2024/2025 JAMB UTME/DE?

JAMB logo
It’s no more news that JAMB has proposed to use the National ID card as a prerequisite for registration of the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and beyond. The matriculation board included this as the 2020 application requirements before it was later suspended.

However, for 2021/2022 and beyond, NIN will be needed for the registrations of UTME/DE and related registrations on the JAMB portal. The board had announced and warned candidates willing to partake in the 2021 admission exercise and those after that to register for National ID cards.

JAMB has said (in 2020) that the compulsory use of prospective candidates’ data from the NIMC’s database would remove the need for JAMB to capture the biometrics of candidates, thereby helping to curb multiple registrations and other forms of malpractices.

However, the National Assembly had stopped the matriculation body from using it.

The House of Representatives, in the 2020, asked JAMB to suspend its plan to use the ID card until 2021 to allow more prospective candidates to register and also to create more awareness.

As a result of that development, prospective UTME and DE candidates are confused as to whether to proceed to the NIMC registration center (this time) or suspend it for this year – as the house has called deferment till 2021.

It was true that the body stopped the proposal that candidates will need their NIN to register for UTME and DE. Yet, the same would not be happening this year.

JAMB Has Confirmed that NIN will be Used for the 2024 UTME/DE

Earlier this year, a confused candidate had taken to the body Twitter page to ask if they’re had stopped the need for NIN (national ID card).

Is jamb still using NIMS for registration next year?

The direct answer according to JAMB was

YES

Answering a similar question, JAMB has insisted that All Candidates wishing to take the 2022 UTME must have the National Identification Number (NIN).

For 2024, it's NOW CONFIRMED that candidates would use NIN for the JAMB registration. I don't doubt it because it took JAMB pleading from various stakeholders before the board suspended it for the previous year.

In fact, each candidate will be required to send NIN followed by the 11-digit NIN (e.g NIN 23456789123) to 55019 to receive the profile code required to procure the PIN for the registration.

Hence, if you intend to enroll for this admission exercise, you should start the preparation by registering your national ID card right now.

While doing that, be conscious of your profile details as the board will only use your ID date of birth, names, address, state, and local government of origin strictly for the JAMB UTME and DE registrations. You should perfect your information before proceeding to any NIMC centre for the registrations of the National ID Card.

Having said that, candidates will find answers to several heart-burning questions on JAMB/UTME and the use of National ID Card/NIN in, “JAMB and National ID Card (NIN): 15+ Answers to Your Questions”.

    1. Before you use that, make sure you firstly send NIN to 55019 e.g NIN 74979889887639. After that, if the reply gives you the same profile code as that of 2020, then it's ok to use it. If it gives you another code, use the newer code instead.
