Can I Register for DE During My JUPEB/IJMB?

JAMB logo
As an IJMB or JUPEB student, what you aim for in the end is 200-level admission to your desired or qualified course. To achieve this, you must obtain the Direct Entry form. However, in most cases, A'level students wish to obtain the DE form even during the JUPEB or IJMB programs (i.e. when they're yet to complete the program).

This essentially means they want to use awaiting results since their final result will not be available during the course until its completion. The question now is, is it possible to use awaiting results of IJMB/JUPEB for DE registration?

In this post, I will be stating it as it is and address related concerns. Enjoy!

You Can Obtain the DE Form While You're Still Running an A'level Course

While in the midst of your IJMB or JUPEB program, if the DE form is available, you can obtain it. You don't necessarily have to wait until the final exam is written or the result is out before you can participate in the current year's direct entry admission.

Although JAMB prefers you to complete your A'level course and have your result at hand before opting for DE, if we must be frank, that may delay your admission for another year. And who would want to do that in the first place or why pursue the A'level program if you have such time?

However, there are some conditions attached to using awaiting results (AR) of JUPEB or IJMB for the DE application. More on that later in this post.

What You Will Need for Direct Entry (DE) Application as an Awaiting Result IJMB/JUPEB Candidate

I've covered the items you'll need to take along to the JAMB office for the DE application in my post, "Documents Needed for Direct Entry (DE) Registration". However, in your case, the certificate or result of IJMB/JUPEB won't be available at this point. Hence, the following must be available to be attended to:

  1. IJMB/JUPEB form or application number: This is the evidence traceable to ensure that you're already attending the current year's A'level course and that your result will be available upon release.
  2. NIN: You'll need this to generate a JAMB profile code to buy the JAMB DE PIN.
  3. Phone line/SIM: You'll need to get the profile code using your own SIM. Whereas, if you've once generated a profile code for JAMB UTME or any related registration, the same SIM/profile code will be used for this purpose.
  4. O'level result: You'll need your WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, GCE, or NBAIS result, as the case may be.

Unlike candidates who are not using awaiting results, you won't need a JAMB admission letter and evidence of completing the IJMB/JUPEB. However, once the results are out, you're to return to the JAMB office to update your application by submitting it for scanning and uploading.

Why Don't You Convert UTME to DE Instead?

Yes, you heard me right. I earlier said that JAMB doesn't want you to use awaiting results for DE. In fact, candidates using NCE, ND, RN, HND, or BSc to apply for DE are generally not allowed to use awaiting results. You're exempted because of the internal arrangement between JAMB and the concerned boards (IJMB and JUPEB). But what does JAMB want you to do instead, you might ask?

The board wants you to obtain the current year's UTME form and later upgrade it to DE. This is a new method most DE aspirants are using to avoid regularization and hurdles regarding using awaiting results as an IJMB/JUPEB student. It's equally possible that even before the end of your program, your lecturers will tell you the same. They'll advise you to obtain JAMB and upgrade it, if need be, later.

Let's see the interaction between JAMB and a student willing to use an awaiting result.

One Daniella inquired for confirmation and asked JAMB,

...category will now have to register for JAMB, then convert to direct entry by the time my result for this upcoming exam has been released. Am I correct?

The board's reply was detailed.

In an ideal situation, you're supposed to complete your JUPEB program before applying for DE. However, if you want to apply with an awaiting result, you'll have to do that through UTME, then, convert it to DE afterwards.

Conclusion

IJMB and JUPEB students can indeed register for Direct Entry using awaiting results, allowing them to pursue 200-level admissions without waiting for their final exam results. However, this process requires careful adherence to JAMB's specific requirements, including submitting necessary documents and updating the application once the A'level results are released.

Alternatively, students can opt for a strategy that involves registering for UTME and later converting to DE, as suggested by JAMB. This method helps avoid the complexities of regularization and simplifies the admission process for students with awaiting results from their A'level programs.
