UNILAG Vs UNIBEN, Which is Better?

From the time, there has been a war between students of different universities. One such competition was recently between UNILAG and UNIBEN guys.

A tweet got my attention back in 2020 when a UNILAG student (supposed) was catching fun with UNIBEN.

A reply to this tweet should be coming from a UNIBEN guy or someone who cared for UNIBEN

And if you've come across some rankings, comparing schools, you might have been misled or convinced that one was better than the other.

But for real, is UNILAG better than UNIBEN?

In this post, I'll be comparing the University of Lagos with the University of Benin, using fair backgrounds. More likely, in the end, you'll be in a position to decide which is better.

The Look At UNIBEN and UNILAG Based On Certain Backgrounds

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Benin (UNIBEN) are both highly reputable universities in Nigeria, but they have some differences in their history, academic programs, campus life, and overall reputation.

Using 11 different criteria, I've been able to compare the two universities:

  1. History and Background: UNILAG was established in 1962, while UNIBEN was established in 1970. UNILAG was initially located in Yaba, Lagos but was later moved to its current location in Akoka, Lagos. UNIBEN, on the other hand, is located in Benin City, Edo State.
  2. Academic Programs: Both universities offer a diverse range of academic programs, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. UNILAG is particularly renowned for its programs in law, medicine, engineering, and business, while UNIBEN is known for its programs in engineering, medicine, law, and social sciences.
  3. Ranking: According to the 2021 edition of the Webometrics World University Rankings, UNILAG is ranked 17th in Africa and 1,267th in the world, while UNIBEN is ranked 29th in Africa and 2,120th in the world.
  4. Campus Facilities: Both universities have modern facilities such as libraries, lecture halls, laboratories, sports facilities, and student housing. UNILAG has a more extensive campus, with several faculties and departments located in different parts of the campus.
  5. Student Population: UNILAG has a larger student population than UNIBEN, with over 50,000 students enrolled in various programs. UNIBEN, on the other hand, has a student population of around 40,000.
  6. Admission Requirements: The admission requirements for both universities are similar, with applicants required to have a minimum of five credits in relevant subjects in their O'Level examinations. However, the admission cut-off marks for different programs may vary depending on the competitiveness of the program.
  7. Tuition Fees: The tuition fees for both universities vary depending on the program of study. However, in general, UNILAG is more expensive than UNIBEN.
  8. Faculty: Both universities have highly qualified faculty members with extensive academic and research experience. UNILAG has over 1,500 academic staff, while UNIBEN has over 2,000 academic staff.
  9. Research and Innovation: Both universities are actively involved in research and innovation, with numerous research centers and institutes. UNILAG has a stronger research output, with a higher number of research publications and citations.
  10. Student Life: Both universities have vibrant student communities with numerous clubs, societies, and events. UNILAG has a more diverse student population, with students from different parts of Nigeria and other countries
  11. Alumni: Both universities have produced numerous notable alumni who have made significant contributions to various fields, including politics, business, academia, and the arts. Notable alumni of UNILAG include Akinwumi Adesina, Enoch Adeboye, Genevieve Nnaji, Yemi Alade, and Yemi Osinbajo, while notable alumni of UNIBEN include Babatunde Fashola, Richard Mofe Damijo, Omoni Oboli, Lota Chukwu, and Raymond Dokpesi.

Ultimately, the choice between UNILAG and UNIBEN depends on individual preferences, academic goals, and career aspirations. It's important to research both universities carefully and choose the one that aligns best with your academic interests and career goals.
