I've equally seen admission seekers trying to know which is better between the University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University.


One of my earliest arguments was that students, especially, admission seekers should be careful about looking for the best universities. I claimed that there was no best school, we only had the best students.


However, in this short comparison work, I'll be giving you primary information about the University of Ibadan (UI) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), so you can have some basis to understand the difference between the two universities.

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and the University of Ibadan (UI) are two of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Nigeria. Here are some comparisons between the two:

The University of Ibadan is older, having been established in 1948, while OAU was established in 1961. That is more than a decade apart!

2. Location

UI is located in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, while OAU is located in Ife, Osun State.

3. Reputation

However, the 2021 World University Rankings by Times Higher Education ranked OAU 501-600 in the world. While the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities ranked it 4th in Nigeria and 34th in Africa.

5. Faculties and Courses

Both universities have a wide range of faculties and courses. However, UI has more faculties, including Agriculture, Arts, Education, Law, Science, Social Sciences, Technology, and Public Health, while OAU has faculties in Arts, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Law, Education, Science, and Technology.


This may change as each university may acquire more courses in the future.

Both universities have unique cultures and traditions. UI is known for its "Premier" status and the "The Great Ife" moniker for OAU.
