Direct Entry (DE) Admission Requirements for Pharmacy

This post details the specific admission requirements for direct entry applicants seeking to study Pharmacy at various Nigerian universities, highlighting the acceptable qualifications such as NCE, ND, HND, BSC, IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge A-level, and NABTEB A-level, as well as individual university requirements and exceptions.

Even though JAMB recommends three (3) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, and Physics or Mathematics plus UTME requirements for Direct Entry applicants in order to seek admissions for Pharmacy, yet a few universities consider certain other conditions.

This post will emphasize the admission requirements for Pharmacy. As a direct entry applicant, this is a must-read. 

Direct Entry applicants must be holders of any of the following qualifications:

1. Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE)
2. National Diploma (ND/OND)
3. Higher National Diploma (HND)
4. Bachelor of Science (BSC)
5. Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB)
6. Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB)
7. Cambridge Advanced Level
8. NABTEB Advanced Level
9. GCE Advanced Level

While the JAMB brochure will refer to the likes of IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge A'level, and NABTEB A'level, as A'level, qualifications such as NCE, ND, HND, and BSC will be addressed as such. Hence, below are the specific requirements by the universities offering Pharmacy for the course.

1. University of Benin

UNBEN accepts:

1. A' Level pass in Botany in lieu of Biology.
2. B.Sc. second class in related programmes.
3. the university does not accept 'A' Level pass in Mathematics.

2. University of Ilorin

UNILORIN accepts 'A' Level pass in three (3) science subjects:  Chemistry, Physics, and Biology

3. University of Jos

1. UNIJOS accepts BSC Second Class (Hons) and above in related fields plus UTME requirements.
2. UNIJOS accepts for Direct Entry Candidates with ’A’ level requirements plus five ‘O’ level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics Chemistry and Biology. Three ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry, Biology/Zoology/Botany and Physics plus UTME requirement. UNIJOS do not accept Mathematics for Physics.
3. UNIJOS accepts candidates with distinction in National Diploma in Pharmacy Technician from (PCN approved) colleges, plus five ‘O’ level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

4. University of Lagos

UNILAGOS accepts;

1. Very good passes in three (3) JUPEB/'A'-level subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. does not accept B.Sc. degrees.

5. Niger Delta University

NDU accepts:

1. a first degree in Chemistry or any of the Biological Sciences.
2. A' Level passes in Physics, Mathematics, or Statistics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology or Botany at not more than two (2) sittings.

6. Obafemi Awolowo University

OAU accepts B.Sc. with a minimum of 2nd Class Honours in the relevant programme (Sciences).

7. Olabisi Onabanjo University

OOU accepts Botany in lieu of Zoology.

8. University of Nigeria

UNN accepts

1. three (3) 'A' Level passes to include Chemistry, Biology/Zoology/Botany and Physics plus the UTME requirements at not more than two (2) sittings.
2. Bachelor's degree in any of Biological Sciences, Health Science and Technology, or Medical Sciences with a minimum of second class lower division plus the UTME requirements. 
3. HND upper credit in Biological Sciences, Health Science and Technology or Medical Sciences plus the UTME requirements.

9. Delta State University

DELSU requires;

1. A first degree in relevant Biological Sciences with not less than a second class Upper Division may be considered in addition to the UTME requirement.
2. passes in the GCE advanced level or Higher School Certificate (HSC) or approved equivalent, in Chemistry, Biology (Zoology or Botany) and not more than one (1) sitting.

10. Bayero University Kano

BUK requires three (3) 'A' Level passes to include Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. BAYERO does not accept NCE.

11. Ahmadu Bello University

ABU accepts 'A' level/IJMB passes in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Unified Pharmacy Technician Certificate with a minimum of Upper credit.

12. University of Port Harcourt

UNIPORT accepts Three (3) A/level passes in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Mathematics including UTME entry requirements. BSC, not lower than Second Class Lower in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Physics, and Pharmacology including UTME entry requirements.

13. Kaduna State University

KASU accepts Ordinary level requirements plus; Passes in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, or Zoology at Higher School Certificates or Advance level of GCE, IJMB, or equivalents. An acceptable First Degree in a relevant Biological or Physical Sciences discipline.

14. University of Uyo

1. A' Level pass in Botany in lieu of Biology.
2. B.Sc. second class in related programmes.
3. UNIUYO does not accept 'A' Level pass in Mathematics.
