UTME, SSCE & DE Subjects For MLS (Medical Lab. Science)

To gain admission for Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), candidates need to have five SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, A Level passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology for Direct Entry, and a UTME subject combination of English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

When you decide to choose Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) in UTME/DE registration, you have one or two of these universities for consideration. However, the next question will be what are the requirements for its admission.

What is the admission requirement for Medical Laboratory Science?

These requirements should include

  1. the JAMB UTME subject combination
  2. the SSCE or O'level subjects
  3. the Direct entry qualification and grades

In this post, I will be breaking these down. You will see the Direct entry requirement, the UTME requirement, and the O'level requirement for Medical Laboratory Science (MLS).

Official JAMB Requirement For Medical Laboratory Science (MLS)

In the JAMB brochure, the board has listed the following as its official requirements for Medical Laboratory Science (MLS).

  1. Direct Entry: A Level passes to include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology
  2. SSCE Subjects: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
  3. UTME Subjects: English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology

With the stated requirements, you should be fine with almost all the universities offering Medical Laboratory Science. However, some universities may be friendly or tense in the demand.

This is why an in-depth look into the specific requirements of each university will be more helpful.

Universities' Specific Admission Requirements for Medical Laboratory Science (MLS)

I've studied all the universities offering Medical Laboratory Science - Federal, State, and Private.

    Here is my finding!

Many universities e.g. Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Sokoto State, University Of Lagos, Lagos State, University Of Calabar, Calabar, Cross River State, etc., accept the following order as stated generally by the JAMB brochure.

    1. DE Requirements: 'A' Level passes   to include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology
    2. SSCE/O'level Requirement: Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
    3. UTME subject Combination: EnglishPhysics, Chemistry, and Biology

Some universities e.g. Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Osun State University, Osogbo, Osun State,  Ondo State University Of Medical Sciences, Laje Road, Ondo, Ondo State, etc., want the same order.

    1. DE Requirements: 'A' Level passes   to include Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology
    2. SSCE/O'level Requirement: Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
    3. UTME subject Combination: EnglishPhysics, Chemistry, and Biology

A further visit to the official JAMB brochure shows that where a school will accept qualifications for its 100-level, 200-level, or through transfer admission into Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), the following terms must be met irrespective of the university.

However, I've picked two universities below to support this claim.

University Of Jos, Jos, Plateau State, for example, accepts, DE, SSCE, and UTME subjects, as follows.

    1. Three (3) ‘A’ level or IJMB passes to include Physics, Chemistry,  Biology plus ‘O’ level/SSCE pass at Credit level in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at not more than two sittings. (ii.) First Degree Holders of University of Jos or any other University approved by the Senate in Biological Sciences and Bio- Medical-based courses plus ‘O’ Level/SSCE requirements as in (i) above. (iii.) Medical Laboratory Technicians with evidence of registration with the Medical Laboratory Science
    2. Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
    3. Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Also, Edo University, Iyamho, Edo State accepts, including transfer students,

    1. i) ‘A’ level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology in addition to UTME requirements. (ii) A University degree in a relevant field. (iii) OND/HND in related courses with Credit pass plus O' level entry requirement. (iv) IJMB/JUPEB
    2. TRANSFER FROM OTHER UNIVERSITIES: (i)Minimum entry requirements into the desired programme in EDSU (ii) JAMB admission letter of current University/school (iii)JAMB result used in getting admission into current University/School (iv)transcript/certificate from current University/school, which should be forwarded to EDSU
    3. Five Credit passes at SSCE (or its equivalent) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics at not more than two sittings
    4. Physics, Chemistry and Biology
