How to Stay Connected While Seeking Admissions in Nigeria

Before reading this section, you may first read the previous section 1 - Get Set for the Challenge. You can, of course, read later too. That's where the journey to your campus begins.

If you've read it, let's proceed …

Stay Connected - the 2nd Tested and Trusted Approach to Gain Admission

I ought to have used, “stay informed” instead. But I’m aware that, without being connected; you’re losing out on being informed.

Admission in this part of the world or elsewhere needs constant and continual feedback. Candidates must know when activities are on - regarding the schools being proposed.

This is where most admission seekers lose out.

Imagine writing UTME and scoring very high. But, due to your disconnection,

  1. You’re not aware of when the post-UTME forms of your schools were out.
  2. You didn’t know if the sales of such forms were extended.
  3. You didn’t know when and where entrance exams (or post-UTME) would be held.
  4. You don’t know if such exams will be computer-based test or a mere physical screening
  5. You didn’t know when admission lists were out.
  6. You didn’t know if more lists were released aside from the first one. You didn’t know what to do next after being offered admission.

If you missed any of the above information, you could be on the train to unlucky land for that admission year.

As a consultant, I’ve seen and heard a series of complaints and excuses from applicants. Sincerely, nobody cares. With the thousands of aspirants chasing a few spaces at those institutions, I’m not sure a school will be chasing you around with information. Instead, you should be chasing them around.

How Can You Stay Connected and Be Informed About Admission Updates?

From experience, a student won’t know what is going on regarding his or her admission unless he or she can follow all or any of the following channels for updates.

1. School Website/Admission Portal

This is the most recommended source of genuine and official news regards your admission progress.

First, ensure you know the official website of your proposed schools. Most schools’ websites end with the extension .edu.ng. For examples:

  1. unilorin.edu.ng,
  2. ui.edu.ng,
  3. unilag.edu.ng,
  4. uncial.edu.ng,
  5. uniosun.edu.ng,
  6. uniben.edu.ng,
  7. lasu.edu.ng,
  8. uniport.edu.ng,
  9. uncial.edu.ng
  10. etc.

I’m sharing this with you because there are lots of fake websites being created by fraudsters/scammers out there. They’re patiently waiting for the innocent you to enter into their webs. Kindly know your school’s website offhand and go straight to the website whenever you want to check for updates.

Using Google to search is good but if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you can just fall onto a scammer’s website. A school will dedicate a part of its website homepage to share its latest news on the activities including post-UTME, results, admission lists, and so on.

Should your school website have a newsletters option, you can subscribe to receive their posts through your email.

2. Following Experienced Education Blogs

One-stop-shop to get all your selected schools’ updates is through an education blog such as schoolcontents.info. I do my best to keep you updated and guide you on admission, scholarships, and jobs.

Meanwhile, bloggers are equally beggars. This is why some of us don’t vet information before posting. Some only copy and paste others' posts. A good education blogger will not only inform you but will as well, vet the information to be shared and guide you on how to do things to avoid errors. This is why my approach is different.

If you subscribe to two or three education blogs, you can be sure that all your schools' information will not pass you by.

By subscribing I mean, you’ll have to submit your email to me through this link. After that, a message will be sent to your email to confirm your subscription. In order to receive continual updates when I post, you must click on the confirmation/verification link sent to your email.

Also, if you're chasing two or three schools, and you don't want to be visiting their portals from time to time. It will be time-consuming, of course. Subscribing to a blog like this will send updates to you about all.

3. Facebook/WhatsApp Groups

First, warnings here!

Some Facebook/WhatsApp groups were created to scam you - so be very CAREFUL.

Some admins will work very hard to answer your questions and share official and official-like updates. This is a way to get closer to all members and win their hearts. Before you know it, they will be sending you private (or open) messages so that they can help you with the admissions. They call this RUNZ! Then, you’re asked to send your documents and the processing fee.

Run for your money, please!

The ANNOYING thing is that most Facebook/WhatsApp group admins are also admission seekers like you. But they’ll claim they are not. Some may claim they are working in the school ICTs or admission offices.

RUN from RUNZ!

However, in reality, you can benefit from joining your school groups on Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. Some students will have vital information to share. Just be careful with what you believe.

In the same vein, some schools have dedicated X handles and Facebook Pages to share information. Following your schools on those channels will be far better.

Below are a few of such schools:

  1. FUTA Facebook Page
  2. University of Lagos (UNILAG) X Handle
  3. YABATECH X Handle
  4. JAMB X Handle
  5. Adekunle Ajasin University X Handle (AAUA)
  6. Federal Polytechnic Ede X Handle
  7. University of Benin (UNIBEN) or This hashtag
  8. University of Ibadan (UI) X Handle
  9. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) X Handle
  10. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) X Handle

To search if your schools have dedicated Facebook pages, visit Facebook or X. Then, in the search box above your page, enter the name of the schools, in full. A list of suggested groups and pages will be displayed for your picking. You can send a membership request (to join a Facebook group) or click on Follow to see updates from those X pages.

4. Newspapers and Radio Announcements

Especially for JAMB news, radio and newspapers can be the right sources of information.

However, some schools prefer using newspapers to announce the sales of Post-UTME forms, posting the names of the admitted candidates, etc.

Below are a few well-known schools that use newspapers and radio.

  1. Nigerian Police Academy (POLAC)
  2. Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA)
  3. Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB)
  4. Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora
  5. Oke Ogun Polytechnic, Saki

Conclusion

Information is power. Remember the scripture, “My people are destroyed for lack of information: ...

Call it knowledge - it's the same!

If you can take to any of the above, you’re more on the safer side than otherwise.

This is the end of section 2 - Stay Connected. Now, let’s proceed to section 3 - Stay Focused.

Subscribe to this blog to get it to your email if the next section is not ready now. You'll be notified as soon as it's available.
