JAMB on Attachment, Dreads, Henna, Hijab, Tattoos

JAMB's Registrar
JAMB has, on different occasions, announced what to come to its exam hall with, as well as what is not allowed. Among the acceptable items are pencils, and recommended glass. Those not wanted in the exam are more, of course, among which are calculators, phones, special glasses, handkerchiefs, etc.

While this is going on, students are wondering if the prohibition of items will affect certain trendy fashions. They want to know if hairstyles can be a problem during the JAMB exam. Hence, questions such as will they allow attachment, dreadlocks, henna/laali, tattoos, or certain dresses.

In this post, we'll be discussing the issues concerning dressing in the JAMB exam hall.

1. Henna, Otherwise Known as “Laali”

JAMB won't be smiling at students who put on henna or “laali”. Of course, in your own interest for the purpose of this exam, don't wear any painting that will affect your biometrics or that may be suspicious to be conveying some information that may be mistaken to aid exam malpractices.

Henna
In recent years, for example in 2023, JAMB warned students not to put henna on their hands/fingers on any suspicious part.

In its advisory, the board stated:

“Henna when applied on the fingers obstructs the smooth biometric verification of the candidates’ fingers. Also in an attempt by candidates to clean their fancy henna drawings, they used chemicals that damaged the whorls on their fingers, hence making biometric verification and authentication difficult..

2. Tattoos

Similar to Henna or laali, is the tattoo. It’s not a concern if it's a permanent one. When you have to wear a temporary tattoo, be sure it's conveying any message leading to exam malpractices

Tattoo
If possible, remove temporary tattoos before heading to the exam center.

3. Outrageous and Indecent Dresses

You're advised to dress more responsibly for the purpose of your UTME. After the papers, even though not still the best, you can go back to your usual life. Any clothes that will cause distractions at the centers and expose your body should be avoided. Clothes that may arouse any suspicion of hiding things should be avoided either.

Indecent Dresses
On indecent dressing, the Board warned candidates “against indecent dressing, which in some cases, had constituted a major distraction to candidates, embarrassing even the candidates wearing such dresses as others pass offensive glances at them thereby destabilizing their comportment for the examination.

According to the board:

“In some cases, it has been used to aid and abet examination malpractices. The Board views such improper dressing as a serious breach of the UTME ethics, adding that provocative and seductive dressing as well as willful and deliberate exposure of one’s body to the public will no longer be condoned as they are capable of causing distraction to candidates and examination officials alike.”

4. Hijab, Niqob and Head Covers

JAMB allows students to wear their hijab during exams. However, to the distraction of the board or the center official, you may be asked to remove the head cover for search before you'll be allowed to put it back on.

A board's representative has categorically stated that female candidates who wear hijab to the examination centers are allowed, adding that JAMB was not against wearing any particular dress.

We are not going to stop anyone from taking the examination but the rule remains that if one is wearing things such as a scarf and hijab, you must submit to security checks at such centre.

Of course, you might have heard that, in the past, students were not allowed to wear hijabs in the exam hall. That's true at a center, to be precise, the Covenant University (CBT centre), Otta, Ogun State

Hijab
That year the action had triggered nationwide outrage, with individuals and civil society groups accusing the management of the University of discrimination.. In its reaction, JAMB said it took action immediately when its attention was drawn to the issue.

According to the University, no such authority was given to that effect and it decried the attendant embarrassment the incident had caused to the institution. It was, therefore, against this backdrop that upon learning of the University along with its CBT Centre officials, had rushed to the gate to rescue the unfortunate situation and ensure that the candidates take their examination.

Apparently, this will not repeat itself at the center or any other center again except they want the wrath of JAMB and civil organizations.

5. Attachment, Dreadlocks, and Tinted Hair

There is nowhere JAMB is openly against ladies using attachment hairs, or both male and female students from wearing dreadlocks and tinted hairs. However, I still have to warn you not to be too lousy about anything you're putting on.

Different Hair Styles
As a matter of fact, you don't have to remove your attachments, loosen your dreadlocks, or repaint your hair because of UTME. Those things generally won't covey a bad notion at the center but if it’s done like a thug, especially with indecent clothes, things may go south.

In fact, being delayed for search and questioning when others are already writing their exam may lead to time-wasting and eventual exam anxiety. This is why you should be moderate. If you can’t do without attachment, dreadlocks, and tinted hairs, tune that down with decent clothing.

Conclusion

In navigating the labyrinth of JAMB regulations, here are some tips to ensure a smooth examination experience:

  1. Preparation Beyond Pencils: Familiarize yourself with JAMB's guidelines regarding permissible items and prohibited paraphernalia well in advance. This includes not just stationary but also attire and adornments.
  2. Mindful Ink: If you opt for temporary tattoos or henna, ensure they bear no semblance to cheating aids. Prioritize removal if there's any ambiguity to avoid unnecessary scrutiny.
  3. Dress with Discretion: Select attire that not only complies with decency standards but also facilitates hassle-free security checks. Avoid outfits that could conceal unauthorized items or attract undue attention.
  4. Be Modesty: While self-expression through hairstyles is permissible, opt for moderation over flamboyance. Keep attachment, dreadlocks, and tinted hair within reasonable bounds to avoid unnecessary scrutiny.
  5. Early Arrival: Arrive at the exam center well in advance to allow for any unforeseen delays due to security checks or procedural requirements. Punctuality mitigates stress and ensures a composed demeanor during the examination.
  6. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of any updates or advisories from JAMB regarding examination protocols. This ensures compliance with the latest regulations and minimizes the risk of inadvertent violations.
  7. Stay Calm: Amidst the whirlwind of regulations and expectations, maintain composure. Confidence and a clear mind are invaluable assets during the examination, facilitating optimal performance.

By adhering to these tips and exercising prudence in your preparations, you can navigate the JAMB examination with confidence and composure, ensuring a seamless experience from start to finish.
