7 Items You Can't Change After JAMB Registration

JAMB logo
On this blog, a few posts have been dedicated to answering questions on what could be changed and what couldn't be changed after you've registered and submitted your JAMB form. While those posts are still up to date, it will be time-saving to provide a complete list of items candidates won't be able to edit or change once they're done registering and submitting their JAMB forms.

This is what this post is meant to give you. It won't stop there, as a few related matters will be addressed - among which will include a few confusing answers from the board on what you can still do if you've made such mistakes.

1. Candidates' Names

JAMB has, in recent times, allowed admission seekers to change their names even after JAMB registration. When the 2024 JAMB form was announced, the board changed its system. It declared it won't correct any errors in the names of the UTME and DE applicants once they have submitted applications at the JAMB CBT centers or at the JAMB office (for DE applicants).

Whereas, in the years past, candidates could still correct such mistakes although limited to spelling and omission errors - as name replacement or interchanging were not allowed.

With the new announcement, the board holds the position that you won't be able to correct your names even if omission, spelling, arrangement, or replacement. What the board wanted was for prospective UTME or DE applicants with errors in their names to first correct it at NIMC, then send a REQUERY SMS to 55019/66019.

This will fetch the newly corrected data before candidates can continue with the JAMB UTME or DE registrations.

That is a well-thought-out method; however, what of candidates who are not aware of this until they've already registered and submitted their applications even with errors in the names? Possible solutions later in this post.

2. Candidates' Dates of Birth

Similar to names, date of birth is part of the items that JAMB exports from the National ID card (NIN) information. As such, what applies to names applies to date of birth (DOB).

You ought to have corrected the errors earlier with NIMC, sent the REQUERY SMS, and fetched the updated date of birth, before applying for JAMB. But, if you miss out on that, you'll have to read what the board recommends in the later part of this post.

3. Candidates' State/Local Government of Origin

Without a doubt, the state of origin and local government of origin are from your NIN data. Once wrong, it'll be wrong on your JAMB. Then, you'll face the same option as errors in names, and date of birth.

In the same vein, you're expected to correct such before registering JAMB as once completed, JAMB may not entertain any request to change the state/local government of origin.

4. Candidates' Genders

This is the last information usually being taken from NIN. If you've mistakenly been registered as female or male during your National ID card registration, the same will appear on your JAMB slip.

These errors are expected to be corrected before going for JAMB and after REQUERY SMS to fetch the updated gender information.

5. Candidates' Emails

JAMB doesn't allow a change of email after the candidate has completed their UTME or DE registration. Apart from the fact that this email has been linked up with your profile which can be changed too, the board has attributed its reluctance to change emails to security reasons.

On occasion when affected students complain to JAMB, the board never holds back in declaring its stance on the fact that emails, after being used for JAMB or linked later, can't be changed.

6. Candidates' Phone Numbers

Similar to JAMB email, phone numbers are not changeable after being used for UTME or DE. The summary of this is that the phone number is already linked with the profile code and since the profile code can't be changed, the phone number can't as well.

If you contact JAMB on this attempt, the board will 100% answer that the "Windows correction or change of phone number has not been opened". The little secret is that "it won't be opened".

7. Candidates' Subject Combination

This can be changed if you notice any errors before the exam is too close. For instance, if you notice right after submission or a few days before the JAMB mock or the main UTME or DE exam.

JAMB has in the past opened windows for candidates with the wrong subjects to make amendments before going for the JAMB or mock exams.

JAMB announced closure of change of subjects
However, if the errors were not noticed until a few days before the mock or main UTME, especially if the board had already scheduled candidates for their chosen subjects, you might be out of luck to make any corrections. In this case, there are limited options for you to explore.

JAMB Can Be Motherly To Correct Names, DOB, Gender, State/LGA Even After JAMB Results

Let's say you've not corrected these errors on NIN before going for the JAMB registration or you're reading this post late, it's obviously too late to be sending REQUERY SMS now. In fact, if you send it, it'll work for you against the next JAMB if you must take it next year or years after. However, for the correct year, it's campaign after elections.

So, what do you do? Has JAMB stated that it could be lenient with those who are not aware?

Well, as a consultant, I've personally interacted with JAMB on this mess. I know very many students have tried too. So, the board is aware something more motherly should be done to help people with a series of errors from NIN to the JAMB registration.

Since I may not be able to share my personal interaction with JAMB here with you, I've decided to share some lenient replies to other candidates' complaints. Going through this may give you some relief and if you're lucky, you may be helped out of this mess. But in my own opinion, it'll be wiser to wait till JAMB results are out before making an attempt. Following up with official updates also is recommended as the board can change its stance anytime by popular and public demand.

In response to a student inquiry, as of 2024, JAMB stated that you could also rearrange names on the JAMB platform. Whereas, this was in response to a student who claimed he had already completed his JAMB registration.

The candidate reported:

The middle name on my Jamb is Oluwaseun due to my nin which I have corrected while the middle name on my WAEC is CHIBUZOR

JAMB's response:

You can also rearrange names on the JAMB platform; however, you must do the same on the O'level issuing agency's platform. Please, weigh your options and select the suitable one for you.

Of course, with this response, the handler is giving the relief that if the same correction can be successfully done on the WAEC result, the same will be attended to by the board. However, as of now, WAEC is no longer entertaining the correction of names.

In this case, if the names on your SSCE result are correct, then you can approach any JAMB office near you to seek correction of names with your SSCE as supporting documents. You may be lucky!

Similarly, a candidate's case was reported to JAMB as follows:

My cousin missed a letter in his name on the NIN, so it's missing a letter from the name on his WAEC, Is there anything we can do about it?

JAMB's reply:

Let him return to both NIMC and WAEC to effect the necessary changes. Thereafter, apply for correction of name in JAMB.

Apparently, the board is still considering correction of names after completion of the JAMB registration provided the SSCE result and NIN can be corrected by the candidates and they tally with names he wants to change to on the JAMB portal.

Although the interactions shared above were about errors in the names, you could also give some trials to errors in the date of birth, if you have a correct birth certificate together with the same correction made on the NIN. Similarly, the gender, if done on NIN, and state/local government of origin, if done on NIN with the correct local government identification document. You may be lucky!
