Can I Correct/Change Names After JAMB Registration?

JAMB logo
One of the data points many students wish to change after their JAMB registration is their name. Errors originating from the National Identification Number (NIN) have crept into the JAMB registration, resulting in students encountering the same inaccuracies after registering for JAMB.

JAMB has provided new methods to correct errors such as names, date of birth, state/local government of origin, gender, etc. However, a some students are either unaware of these methods or have failed to utilize them. Some proceeded with their JAMB registration without rectifying the errors first, either due to oversight or a desire to complete the registration process swiftly.

Now, these students are inquiring whether they can change their names after completing the JAMB registration. Is such a change possible? If yes, what steps should be taken?

Let us delve into this matter and provide guidance on what is feasible and what is not.

It is Impossible to Correct or Change Names after JAMB Registration

Previously, candidates could complete their JAMB registration and later address errors in their names. They would typically rectify errors in their NIN at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and then apply for a name correction at the JAMB office.

However, starting from 2024, JAMB no longer facilitates corrections not only to names but also,

  1. date of birth,
  2. state/local government of origin, and
  3. gender.

An interaction between an affected student and JAMB unequivocally illustrates the board's stance on this issue.
Therefore, JAMB unequivocally rules out the possibility of correcting errors in certain data after they have completed their registrations.

What Steps Can Be Taken to Rectify Errors Before the Registration?

JAMB has introduced a method to correct errors before proceeding with the JAMB Computer-Based Test (CBT) or visiting its office for registration.

Whether you have registered for JAMB before or are taking the exam for the first time, the following steps will help you to correct your name and other data before registering for JAMB:

  1. Use the same SIM card that was used for the previous JAMB registration, if available, or any SIM card if it is a first-time registration.
  2. Text "REQUERY" followed by a space and your NIN to either 55019 or 66019 (e.g., "REQUERY 45617829110").
  3. Candidates who have previously obtained profile codes should use the shortcode that was initially used (i.e., send to 55019 or 66019 accordingly).
  4. Upon sending the REQUERY SMS, you will receive a confirmation SMS indicating that the changes have been successfully pulled from the NIMC database. If errors persist or if the changes have not been reflected, an error message will be received.
  5. After successfully updating your data through the REQUERY process, proceed to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) center or a JAMB office for registration.
  6. Inform the registration attendant that you have corrected your data at the NIMC and that the REQUERY process has been completed successfully. The attendant will verify this information at the beginning of your registration.
  7. Any spaces you corrected should have been marked by the JAMB system, enabling them to rectify the same data during the registration process. This correction is not possible if the NIN corrections and REQUERY were not completed beforehand.
