Is True That Cambridge is Not Accepted for DE Again?

A few posts had been written on this blog to list all available and acceptable A'level programs for direct entry admissions. For example, they were well embellished in my post, "200 Level Admission Without JAMB: IJMB, JUPEB, and Cambridge"

Among the listed A'level programs were:

  1. IJMB - Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination
  2. JUPEB - Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board
  3. Cambridge A'level
  4. NABTEB A'level

A few years ago, however, JAMB announced that it wouldn't honor NABTEB A'level any longer for direct entry admission.

And recently, there have been queries about the Cambridge A'level program too. Is Cambarigge still acceptable for direct entry (DE) admission in Nigeria?

Well, in this post, I will be answering this question. Stay with me

JAMB Is No Longer Accepting Cambridge A'level For Direct Entry (DE) Admission

For the purpose of clarification, Direct entry admission is only open to holders of certain higher qualifications which may include BSC, HND, ND, NCE, A'level, etc. who are willing to pursue another qualification in any university of their choice.

For years, A'level has been a program popular among certain universities in Nigeria e.g. University of Ibadan, and the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta. These universities, not only run the program locally, but they also accept applicants who run the program with them or elsewhere through JAMB direct entry.

Unfortunately, in the year 2023, JAMB didn't accept Cambridge A'level for its DE admission. With this, even if the universities that accept it really want you to come, you're limited now since your first application has to be through JAMB.

Every DE admission seeker must go through JAMB. Since this seems to be the end of accepting this international A'level program by the matriculation and admission board, you're out of luck if you're looking up to Cambridge.

JAMB Confirms It Won't Accept Cambridge For Direct Entry (DE)

A student that wasn't aware of this development has recently lodged his complaint with the board. Here was his post

Please we have been trying to register for the Direct Entry with the Cambridge A-levels result at the Lagos Jamb office but they keep telling us that they have not gotten approval to go ahead with the registration of Cambridge A-levels.pls what do we do.

That was taken from the official Twitter handle of the board.

JAMB in its affirmative reply said it is not at present listing Cambridge in its acceptable A'level for JAMB DE application.

Please note that the Cambridge A-level certificate is not currently listed among recognized qualifications for Direct Entry registration; however, you are urged to raise a ticket on http://jamb.gov.ng/support to complain and attach your certificate for the attention of the management.

UPDATE: JAMB has resumed accepting Cambridge A'level for DE admission. However, this only affects candidates who have done the program before 2022. So, with your old result, you can still process the direct entry application.

What You Should Expect Regard This Development

If you take note of the recommendation in the board's response, asking students to still contact the management, it's likely that provision has been temporarily made for candidates who are currently holding the qualification.

They may still be allowed to use their results for the admission in next few years. But not for those who will be writing the same exam henceforth.

In other words, it's more likely that candidates who have already possessed Cambridge A'level would still be able to apply for DE to the participating universities in Nigeria. But that will be up to the 2022/2023 results. Any results after might not stand a chance.

Similarly, the word "currently" in the board's reply might mean they might restore it later. But we don't have to entirely rely on this stand.

You Can Still Do Cambridge If You Aim Abroad

Whether you already own Cambridge or you intend to, if you aren't necessarily keen on any university in Nigeria, several universities abroad especially in the UK will gladly welcome you with your result.

Other countries accepting Cambridge include:

  1. Ireland,
  2. USA,
  3. Canada,
  4. Australia,
  5. New Zealand,
  6. India,
  7. Singapore,
  8. Egypt,
  9. Jordan,
  10. South Africa,
  11. Netherlands,
  12. Germany and
  13. Spain.

You Still Have JUPEB and IJMB If You're New

For those who are contemplating Cambridge, IJMB, and JUPEB until now, you should, at this point, understand what's waiting for you if you insist on Cambridge.

IJMB and JUPEB are locally owned and administered by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) respectively. There no need to worry about retention of these two, They're are here to stay!

Hence, since they serve the same purpose as the Cambridge A'level, except you prefer studying abroad, you should for one of the two instead.

Conclusion

It's safe to say that Cambridge A'level results won't be accepted for direct entry application henceforth especially if such results postdate this official announcement.

If you have an existing result, contact any proposed university in Nigeria on this stand, before you proceed with the processing of your DE application.

However, if you want to study abroad with your result, you've nothing to worry about as there are several universities in the above-listed countries wanting you more.
