Some candidates with D7, E8, or F9 in one or two of their results are concerned about the possibility of being selected with such results. Can you apply with an ordinary pass or if you fail any of the O'level subjects, will it work for the application?
In this post, I will be showing you where it's possible to use D7, E8, or F9 for any of the available forces' application forms. This post will also emphasize where such grace may not be given.
Most Forces' Applications Will Only Require 5 to 4 Subjects
Although most candidates wrote 9 or 8 subjects in their WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or GCE, the forces will usually only require credit passes in about 4 or 5 subjects when inviting applicants for their positions.
In other words, once you have 4 or 5 subjects in your SSCE (O'level), it won't matter if you have F9, E8, or D7 in the other subjects.
For example, Nigerian Army usually will require candidates to have at least 4 credit passes and the credits should include English. With this, if you have a C in English, with F9 in Maths plus credit in any other three subjects e.g Yoruba, Literature, Biology, you're safe to apply and could be considered.
According to the Nigerian Army advert, "all applicants must possess at least a minimum of 4 passes in not more than two sittings in WASCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB".
In the statement above, it's not made clear in which subjects the four credits should come, experience from past applications has shown that English must be included.

Some Forces May Be Specific About the Subjects to Have Credits in and Those You Won't Need
The Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Customs, and similar others usually require both English and Maths with a few other subjects that you should not have D7, E8, or F9 in.
For example, the Navy, for the corresponding vacancies below, strictly states where to have credit passes and doesn't worry about other subjects.
- Seamen: SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language and Mathematics.
- Firemen: SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including the English Language.
- Store Assistants: SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, and Economics. Computer skill is an added advantage.
Nigerian Police usually will require both English and Maths at least C6 with any three other subjects. Other subjects can be D7, E8 or F9

Higher Qualification Posts May Require More Credits and Certifications
So far, I've pointed out what credit and in what subjects some of these forces will require for their forms. You could also see where D7, E8, or F9 can be considered.
However, for senior recruitments such as Nigerian Army (Direct) Short Service (D/SSC), Nigerian Airforce DSSC, NDLEA, etc, candidates, apart from their MSC, BSC, HND, etc, may be required to make strictly not less than 5 credits in their O'level. Some may make certain subject compulsory depending on the position applied for.
Conclusion
Nearly every force recruitment is making English and Maths compulsory recently. Nigerian Army, like a few others, may accept D7, E8, or F9 in one of these two subjects.
Making at least three more credits, apart from English and Maths, will also leave you without any doubt too.
However, with the above present, you won't need credits in any other subjects to apply for the recruitment. F9, E8, or D7 in others is acceptable.
In all, if a force will accept not accept D7, E8, or F9 in any of your SSCE subjects the advert should spit that out. That is, you should be able to read that on the application website. Therefore, be sure you check the advert, from the forces' official portals, before you conclude which is which.
