How To Apply For MIT Transfer Admissions

Having put you through the application to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a first-year applicant, there is a need to guide prospective applicants seeking to be admitted as transfer applicants too.


In this post, let's see the requirements for transfer admission and the method of application.

Who is a Transfer Applicant?

You'll be qualified to seek admission into MIT, on transfer mode, on two terms.


  1. You're done with high school and
  2. You've completed at least one year of college


Transfer applicants can file for spring entry usually starting in February. For this, the final application with all supporting documents by October yearly. 


For fall entry, usually starting in September, the final application with all supporting documents must have been received by March yearly.

MIT Transfer Admissions Requirements and Eligibility

  1. Prospective applicants must have completed their year one of the studies at an accredited college, university, technical institute, or community college by the time of their prospective enrollment and may apply for transfer admission.
  2. Applications in year one will not be accepted and applications in the 2nd term (second semester) of year three will not be accepted either.
  3. There is a chance to apply for one entry per year for any transfer applicants. Either you pick spring or fall but never both.
  4. Citizens can apply for both Spring and fall entries. however, foreign applicants (international students) are limited to applying for the fall entry only which is usually by September.

Documents To Be Sent and/or Uploaded For MIT Transfer Application

  1. Transcripts will be required for scanning and uploading during the online application.
  2. Two letters of recommendation will be required from a math or science professor. The other should be from any academic professor who knows you well.
  3. Results of SAT or ACT will be required as spring entry applicants must take a test by the October test date, and fall entry applicants must take a test by the March test date.
  4. School Official Report, by your advisor, school registrar, or another school official.
  5. An application fee of $75 will be required: However, you may request a fee waiver.

MIT Transfer Admission Method of Application and Payment

  1. Visit the university's admission portal or click https://apply.mitadmissions.org/account/register?r=https%3a%2f%2fapply.mitadmissions.org%2fapply%2f
  2. On the next page, enter your email, first and Last Name, and date of birth. Click submit. A temporary PIN will be sent to your email.
  3. On the next page, log in with your temporary PIN and date of birth.
  4. Fill out the rest of the form and submit it.
  5. Print all the documents as instructed.
