Is College of Technology, Esa Oke a Polytechnic?

OSCOTECH Esa Oke entrance
Just recently, a guy and his sister were arguing about the Osun State College of Technology Esa Oke (OSCOTECH).

The guy was seeking admission into the institution but he couldn't be easily convinced as to whether the school was a polytechnic or a college of education.

The sister said OSCOTECH was a polytechnic while the guy insisted it's called a college. Hence, it's a college of education.

I came in after hearing the two sides. And below is the summary of our discussion.

Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke is Truly a Polytechnic

Even though its name includes the word "College", this higher institution is still a polytechnic.

Of course, the naming might be confusing. You shouldn't be confused. That's what the founder decided to name the school.

The Enabling Bill establishing the college was signed into law by the first Executive Governor of Osun State, His Excellency Alhaji Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke on the 12th of October, 1992. By its establishment, the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke rose from the ashes of the erst-while Esa-Oke satellite campus of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, founded in 1981 to become an autonomous Institution.

OSCOTECH Esa Oke is one of the two state-owned polytechnics in Osun State with Osun State Polytechnic Iree as the second.

But Why was it Named College of Technology?

Yes, that's exactly the point. If it could be a college of education, it wouldn't have been named the "college of technology".

"of Technology" makes the difference!

Colleges of Education usually run NCE which is primarily a 3-year education course. Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, just like any other polytechnics (federalstate, or private), primarily runs two academic programmes - OND and HND.

OND is a two-year programme. So also is HND which comes after possessing HND.

Other Colleges of Technology Just Like OSCOTECH

For better reference, Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke is not the only polytechnic named with "College" or without the word "polytechnic" in their naming.

A few other polytechnics with this variance include:

  1. Oyo State College of Agriculture, Igboora (state-owned polytechnic)
  2. Federal College of Agriculture, Akure
  3. Federal Co-operative College, Ibadan
  4. And other monotechnics

Conclusion

The fact that the word "polytechnic" doesn't reflect in the name of Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke but with the "College" instead", doesn't make it a college of education. It's officially a polytechnic that is running the same programmes and awarding the same certificates just like every other polytechnic.

In short, the College of Technology, Esa Oke is a polytechnic. It is officially known as Osun State College of Technology (OSCOTECH), Esa Oke. It is a state-owned tertiary institution located in Esa Oke, Osun State, Nigeria. The college offers various National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programs in fields such as Engineering, Sciences, Business Studies, and Applied Arts.
