List of Polytechnics That Accept Passes For HND

Despite the limitations of a pass grade from a National Diploma (ND) program, many polytechnics in Nigeria will still accept such candidates for Higher National Diploma (HND) programs, provided they complete a two-year industrial training (IT) period. This extended IT period aims to equalize the candidate's experience with those holding higher ND grades. Polytechnics such as Federal Polytechnic Offa, Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State Polytechnic Iree, and Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin are examples of institutions that will consider ND holders with pass grades if they meet this requirement.

The least, grade to have after your National Diploma from any polytechnic is PASS. Yet, it's way better than failure.

Due to the weakness of the pass as a grade, it's more than difficult to gain admission into any university around through direct entry. Even lower credits are being looked down on very recently. 

As a result, the concerned ND holders are considering returning back to their former polytechnics or any other polytechnics for their Higher National Diploma Programme. 

However, they're not sure if any polytechnic or very many will accept passes for their HND programmes. And if there are, what are those polytechnics that will be generous enough to consider holders of OND with passes for their Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.

In this post, I will be listing the polytechnics you can consider for your HND if you're unlucky to have the pass in your OND.

All Polytechnics Are Accepting Pass For HND Programme on One Condition

Though you may want a list of the polytechnics that will accept your pass, I would like to save you time. Polytechnics in Nigeria, generally, will accept passes from holders of the National Diploma as an entry requirement for the Higher National Diploma.

However, there is a condition to meet.

While applicants who have distinctions, upper and lower credits are required, statutorily, to undergo one-year industrial training before applying for and proceeding to HND, any candidate with a "pass" will undergo a 2-YEAR INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (IT) instead.

The two-year IT of a pass holder will be concurrent. If you start in 2022 for instance, your year 1 will end by the same month of 2023. Then, you continue to the same month of 2024.

With this extensive industrial exposure, you're now equal to the holder of higher grades than a pass. In this case, you can apply for the HND form of any polytechnic - be it federal, state, or private.

Proofs That a 2-Year Industrial Training Will Make Any Polytechnic Accept Your Pass For HND

The Federal Polytechnic Offa Kwara State states in its advert, 

Candidates with PASS grades at the ND are eligible for consideration for admission provided they have a minimum of two (2) years post-industrial Training experience.

The Federal Polytechnic Ede also in its HND advert states that,

Applicants with Pass Grade in the ND will be required to have at least two (2) years Post National Diploma Industrial Experience

Read item 3, under Entry Requirements for Higher National Diploma (HND) Programmes

The Osun State Polytechnic Iree states, 

National Diploma (ND) in the same discipline with a minimum of a Lower Credit obtained from NBTE Accredited Programmes/Institutions plus a minimum of One Year Post National Diploma Industrial Attachment/Work Experience in the field of Specialization. However, in exceptional cases, candidates with ordinary Pass Grades in the National Diploma with a minimum of 2 years of Post-National Diploma Industrial Attachment/Work Experience may be considered.

The Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin also states that

Applicants with Pass Grade in the National Diploma (ND) will be required to have at least two years Post-National Diploma industrial experience.

Conclusion

A polytechnic doesn't have to be picky about your grade as long as you can certify your ND result even though it's a pass, together with 2 years of industrial training (IT) and a good performance in the HND entrance exams and interview if any.
