Optometry is one of the medical courses you can opt-in for in polytechnics. Unlike Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy which you may not have access to in polytechnics and colleges of education, Optometry which is offered mainly at universities can also be studied at a polytechnic in Nigeria.

This post will not only give you the name of the polytechnic where you can study Optometry in Nigeria, but it will also give you the background to the course, the admission requirements (SSCE and UTME subject combination).

What is Optometry?

People who study optometry are also called Eyecare professionals. An eye care professional is an individual who provides a service related to the eyes or vision. It is any healthcare worker involved in eye care, from one with a small amount of post-secondary training.

If you study Optometry through a polytechnic, you'll be awarded the National Diploma (ND) at the end of a 2-year study. However, those who still want to cross to the universities offering Optometry through the JAMB DE form, can, with good ND grades (e.g Distinction or Upper Credit).

Polytechnics Offering OPTOMETRY

Checking through the official JAMB brochure, only the Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri is offering Optometry. The Federal Polytechnic, Nekede is a federal government-owned higher institution located in Nekede, Owerri West local government area in Imo State, South-Eastern Nigeria.

Admission Requirements for Optometry Admission at the Polytechnic

At O'level, candidates must have at least five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language and four (4) credit passes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Agricultural Science in not more than two sittings.

In JAMB UTME, candidates' subject combinations should be English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics/Biology. Candidates without Maths in JAMB but with Biology and Physics could be considered for admission.
